POSITION SUMMARY: The Surgical Technologist Extern position coincides with enrollment in an accredited surgical technology program. This position provides clinical hours to fulfill program requirements while gaining experience needed to step into a Surgical Technologist position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Surgical Services Surgical Technologist Resident, in collaboration with their surgical tech preceptor, collects and prepares all supplies and instrumentation intended to be used on the sterile field. During surgery, the Surgical Tech Resident maintains a sterile field while providing appropriate instrumentation through a combination of the intended surgery, individual surgeon preference, and anticipation of the surgeon's needs as the procedure progresses. Non-clinical support includes cleaning and sterilization of instruments, cleaning and proper care of equipment, and provision of a surgical environment that is safe and clean.
Main Responsibilities:
• Collect appropriate instruments and supplies for each assigned case
• Prepare and maintain a sterile field
• Perform proper intraoperative instrument decontamination
• Operating room turnover
• Updating surgeon preference cards

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Education: Active enrollment in associate degree of applied science in Surgical Technology program from an accredited facility
Preferred Certifications: National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification within 6 months of graduation.
