Position Summary:
The Security Officer is responsible for patrolling hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism and unauthorized entry. They also assist staff with managing unruly visitors and patients while addressing hospital safety and environmental concerns.
In this role, the Security Officer will conduct proactive monitoring and respond promptly to potential or actual security threats within the facility. This includes investigating and managing all security incidents. It's essential to maintain a thorough understanding of policies and procedures regarding alarms, appropriate emergency responses and emergency/disaster preparedness plans. Additionally, the Security Officer will assist in facilitating planned drills and simulations to ensure emergency preparedness.
The Security Officer will be involved in investigations requiring accuracy of reports and documentation related to security activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent, required
- Associate Degree in any discipline, preferred
Minimum Work Experience:
Two (2) years law enforcement, auxiliary police officer, detention officer experience or two (2) years of security experience in a healthcare setting; or two (2) years of security experience with documented de-escalation training; or two (2) years of Military experience with law enforcement training with documented de-escalation training on DD-214 with Honorable Discharge; or tow (2) years of service in active-duty military, military reserve or National Guard with an Honorable Discharge.
Required Skills:
- Requires critical think skills, decisive judgement and the ability to work with minimal supervision
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
- Valid Driver's license upon hire
- Valid P.O.S.T. Certification, preferred
- Proof of current vehicle insurance to drive facility vehicle
- Handle with Care required for Security Guard and Security Medical Specialist within 6 months of hire
- Become a Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) in one year of hire.
- Become a Certified Advanced Healthcare Security Officer (CAHSO) from the International Association for Healthcare and Safety (IAHSS) in two years of hire.
Essential Functions:
- Periodically tours buildings and grounds, examine doors, windows and gates to determine that they are secure and not tampered with:
- Check all hospital floors on an hourly basis;
- Check all doors and remote buildings hourly;
- Check parking lots hourly;
- Appropriately and promptly engage, unauthorized persons to determine the reason for their presence and to establish whether this person is a threat to the facility
- Contact law enforcement, when needed, to assist with unruly patients, family or the general public
- Assist in the physical restraint of patients when requested by clinical staff
- Must be able to appropriately sound fire alarms and operate a fire extinguisher if needed.
- While patrolling in parking lots, ensure that vehicles are not improperly parked or pared in areas that would pose a hazard to the facility, like fire lanes.
- Must be able to document shift activities and provide incident reports when required utilize word processing software.
- Escort employees to and from their vehicles upon request.
- The individual must have a pleasant attitude and be helpful with employees, patients and the general public while enforcing the policies of the facility.
- In addition to the functions above, the individual must be able to undergo various security and hospital related training on an annual basis and must comply with the continuing education requirements of the facility. The individual may be asked to stand or walk for up to 12 hours a day. The individual may be asked to lift objects over 50 pounds from time to time in order to assist facility staff. Finally, in addition to the duties and functions above the individual will take part in any other duties that are dictated by the future needs of the facility.
