POSITION SUMMARY & PRIMARY DUTIES:

The Surgical Technologist is an allied health professional competent of surgical procedures and an integral part of the surgical care team. The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision and delegation of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist is an expert in theory and application of aseptic and sterile technique, knowledgeable of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgeon preferences to properly prepare the sterile field, supplies, instrumentation, and equipment. During the surgery, the Surgical Technologist provides appropriate instrumentation and assisting through a combination of knowledge, participation, anticipation, and critical thinking. The Surgical Technologist works alongside and assists the circulating nurse as well as other members of the surgical team.

Responsibilities:

  • Completion of case carts
  • Proper communication with operating room staff
  • Cleaning and care of operating rooms, core, and equipment
  • Decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of instrumentation
  • Surgeon preference card maintenance
  • Supply outdates
  • Weekday and weekend call coverage

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology through and accredited Surgical Technology program

Preferred Certification(s):

  • National Certification as a Surgical Technologist through National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • American Heart Association healthcare provider BLS, within one month of hire

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Preferred 1 Year surgical technologist acute care experience.

Required Skills:

  • Verbal, written, and computer skills

    1. Position serves both internal co-workers and external customers, clients, patients, contractors, and vendors.
    2. Access to and/or works with sensitive and/or confidential information.
    3. Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance (e.g., HIPAA). Skilled in the application of policies and procedures. Knowledge of Business Office Standards and Recommended Practices.
    4. Perform other duties as assigned.
