Nurse Extern II Med Surg PRN

JOB SUMMARY 
The Nurse Extern performs a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in a complementary and assistive role. 
Reports to: Director 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN or LPN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation.
Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
Assists with keeping patient rooms and common areas stocked, clean and orderly.
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Review and comply with LifePoint Code of Conduct and all relevant Company and Division policies and procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education
Must be a student enrolled in an RN program with completion criteria for a Nurse Extern II:
1.    A.D.N. – completion of 2nd semester
2.    BSN – completion of 3rd year of education
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
In addition to basic patient care:
1.    Insert foley/straight cath utilize bladder scanner after competency validation by licensed staff
2.    Irrigation/enemas
3.    Sterile dressing changes/wound care with successful competency from Nursing School
4.    Suctioning – Oral/Nasopharyngeal/Tracheostomy
5.    Hemovac/Jackson-Pratts Care
6.    Specimen collection – urine/stool/sputum  
7.    Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) 
8.    IV insertion /phlebotomy with successful competency from Nursing school
9.    NG tube insertion under direct supervision of RN
