RN - Surgery

Under indirect supervision, performs and coordinates pre-op and post-op patient care. Assesses, plans and formulates and directs care to ambulatory surgical patients
- Observes professional ethics in maintaining confidential information concerning the financial, personal, medical, or employment status of patients/families at JPMC.
- Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and hospital.
- Must report safety hazards and initiate appropriate action.
- Must participate in safety instructional programs.
- Assists with the pre and post-operative preparation of the patient.
- Demonstrates competency and knowledge of recovery of patients in the PACU and same day surgery area using established protocol.
- Assesses patient’s needs and develops a care plan identified by the patient, nursing, physician and family.
- Prepares and administers all medication with a high degree of accuracy. Maintains medications in a secured location. Narcotics are secured according to protocol.
- Demonstrates competent CPR techniques and the use of monitoring devices as required in emergency situations.
- Maintains records as appropriate. Charts accurate findings, utilizes the nursing process with medical/legal complications.
- Assist with OR/GI patients pre and post procedure..
- Performs patient education pre and post op. Performs discharge planning.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, performance improvement objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing practice, patient care requirements before and after surgery. Able to assess for and handle complications with required equipment and supplies.
- Report any problems related to supplies, equipment, or any variances or accidents to the OR Supervisor.
- Participates in performance improvement, adheres to regulatory and accrediting body’s standards in performing care in the PACU and SDS area.
- Demonstrate ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols.
Must be a Kentucky State Licensed Registered Nurse with a minimum of an Associate’s Degree. Previous experience required, preferably experience in surgery. Must be BLS certified, preferably ACLS and PALS certified as well. Basic skills include; organizational, customer relations, math, grammar/spelling, computer training, the ability to follow written and oral direction, and the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
