The Monitor Tech observes cardiac monitors, identifies, calculates, interprets, and communicates information regarding cardiac rhythms. Applies and discontinues telemetry services as instructed. Also responsible for maintaining supplies, counting and replacing stock and assisting staff members as needed. Under the supervision of an RN, performs basic patient care activities.

Essential Functions:

Performs continual surveillance of multiple monitors.
Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer or discharge.
Performs clerical duties related to admission, transfer, discharge and documentation of patient information in the central system.
Reports abnormal assessment and telemetry findings to nursing staff.
Tests equipment for proper working order. Reports equipment problems to BIO MED.
Maintains and ensures adequate stock of all designated equipment, including telemetry, cables, batteries and electrodes.
Maintains ongoing observation of all patients' cardiac rhythms and notifies nursing/providers of any rate/rhythm changes.
Measures and interprets heart rhythm and documents as part of patient's record per departmental standards.
Initiates and discontinues monitoring equipment on admission, transfer and discharge.
Performs clerical duties related to admission, transfer, discharge and documentation of patient information in the central system.
Answers telephone and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers. Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythms.
Troubleshoots monitors with nursing staff and contacts BIO MED engineering as appropriate.
Gives report to oncoming shift.
Maintains and ensures adequate stock of all designated equipment, including telemetry, cables, batteries and electrodes.
Reports failures and defective equipment to BIO MED engineering.
Adheres to confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, clinicians, employees and visitors.
Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers.
Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation.Answers call lights and responds to patients' needs appropriately and promptly.Assists with keeping patient rooms and common areas stocked, clean and orderly.Collects and documents patient information as needed (including weight and vital signs).Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.Assists with post mortem care including transport to the morgue.Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, possibly taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.Transfers, moves and repositions patients as assigned.Sets up simple traction as requested.Appropriately obtains, stores and labels specimens. Enters specimen orders accurately and endures safe delivery of specimens to the lab.Assists in discharge process of patients to include: transport, packing of personal belongings and assistance with hygiene needs as requested.Assists with orientation and training of others as directed.

Minimum EducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.
Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Certifications:Basic Life Support (BLS)Handle with care within 3 months of hireLicenses: Current NC Certified Nursing Assistant certification
Successful completion of Arrhythmia Course within 3 months of hire.
Medical terminology experience preferred.Previous monitor technician and/or direct patient care experience preferred.
