Certified Surgical Assist II - FT with Call

The Surgical Assistant assists with the total care given by the interdisciplinary team members to the surgical patient by demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care. The Surgical Assistant performs duties of the Surgical Services Technician under the direction of the Registered Nurse. In addition, the Surgical Assistant performs specific duties under the direction of the surgeon.

• Acts as a Team Lead and provides oversight and direction to Certified Surgical Technologists. Serves as a competency validator for annual competency training for CST.
• Acts as a preceptor for Nurse Residents training on aseptic technique, surgical field and equipment set up, aseptic technique, surgical counts, patient positioning, sterile table set-up, and hemostatic agents.
• Coordinates staff training and designs. Leads and executes staff in-services as assigned.
• Reviews and writes policies and procedures using latest literature, vendor protocols, and surgical standards to meet regulatory requirements.

Minimum Education
Associate’s Degree □ Preferred  X Required

Bachelor’s degree X Preferred □ Required

Completed formal Surgical Assistant Program with certification or equivalent training

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Excellent verbal, written, and intrapersonal communication skills.

Certifications:
□ Basic Life Support (BLS, may obtain week one of orientation)
□ National certification as a Surgical/First Assist (NBSTSA)

Minimum Work Experience
Required - 2 years experience as a surgical assistant.

Required Licenses

Current credential as a surgical assistant or surgical first assistant issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) or their successors; or successful completion of a surgical assistant training program during the applicants service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.

Current license to practice as a surgical assistant in the state of Virginia AND current license to practice as a CST in the state of Virginia.
