Under the general guidance of the physicians/providers performs a variety of noninvasive vascular studies, echocardiography testing, and diagnostic ultrasonographic procedures.

In the execution of job duties, it is the universal expectation that all tasks are performed with a patient centered focus, while also seeking opportunities to continually improve core processes. Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need, which may include but is not limited to: holidays, extended shifts, night and/or weekend shifts, standby and/or on-call. Reports to: Supervisor, Cardiopulmonary Services

Essential Functions 

Receives patients, explains method of procedure and makes sure patient is comfortable.

Provides patient services to all ages using imaging modalities.

Demonstrates competency in positioning patients for exam, generates high quality images to allow accurate interpretation by physician. Collects required data with recognition of abnormalities and extends the scope of examination when needed. Obtains appropriate history and evaluates for potential contraindications. Verifies physician’s order and indication based on one on one patient interview.

Maintains equipment and supplies and organizes work area.

Actively processes studies, worksheets and reports by downloading studies into PAC system to help improve turn around time for the physician and patient. Keeps accurate records.

Demonstrates competency in IV access for bubble studies and in the need of Definity enhancing agent for the patient (echocardiology).

Demonstrates ability to render a preliminary report to ordering physician per departmental policy and within the professional scope of practice (vascular).

Assists with scheduling of the ultrasound and keeps patient flow smooth.


Minimum Education
Accredited Program for Echo Cardiology or Vascular Sonography required.

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Required Skills
Required Certifications:
ARDMS (within 24 months of hire) or CCI Certification (Registered Cardiac Sonographer).

Preferred Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS)

Minimum Work Experience
Preferred - Previous experience in performing Echo or Vascular sonography.
