Nurturing the next generation of nurses
Supporting new nurses strengthens our commitment to quality, safety, and patient outcomes. As a critical first step in your clinical career, Lifepoint Health's Nurse Residency is a 12-month, transition-to-practice program for new RN graduates offered by 40 acute care hospitals nationwide. Throughout three phases, nurse residents are provided with consistent training, mentorship, feedback, and support as they transition to clinical practice.
This evidence-based model, developed with our educational partner, is backed by state and national grants. As a Registered Apprenticeship Program with the US Department of Labor, we are proud to offer the gold standard of industry-driven training addressing the nation's most pressing workforce opportunities.
"The Nurse Residency plays a pivotal role in nurturing the development of our recent graduates by providing the essential knowledge and hands-on experience crucial for delivering competent and high-quality patient care. The program serves as a powerful tool for establishing mentorship and support systems, which then fosters a conducive work environment for the professional growth and retention of new nurses.” –Janice Ivers, MSN, RN, CNE, Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences, National Park College
The heart of our care
How you get your start in nursing matters. As a commitment to our caregivers and patients, new nursing school graduates are enrolled in the Nurse Residency by participating hospitals. This real-world development supports our new nurses in making communities healthier. In addition, new RN grads are offered flexible scheduling, competitive compensation (including possible sign-on bonus opportunities), and performance recognition. Are you ready to thrive with confidence in your nursing career?
The Nurse Residency has bridged what I learned in school with what I learned through practice. I gained confidence by working one-on-one with a preceptor who challenged me and helped advance my critical-thinking skills.

Nurses Residency—What to Expect
Online and in-person components of the program include: Clinical skills simulations; cohort conferences; interactive discussion boards; one-on-one faculty support; competency evaluations; collaborative capstone project. Residents earn 35 nursing contact hours along with a certificate of completion from the US Department of Labor. The three phases of the residency include:
- Phase One: Clinical Competency—This orientation phase is highlighted by residents transitioning to independent care as clinical proficiency expands under the guidance of the preceptor/mentor.
- Phase Two: Culture Transition—Critical thinking, communication and safety skills, and harms prevention techniques are honed, with on-site support as residents explore meaningful capstone project topics.
- Phase Three: Leadership Development—Resident-led capstone project is completed, as RN assimilates into care team with confidence.
The Nurse Residency is a valuable tool for the new nurses in the UP Health System. It provides the training and resources needed to help our nurses transition into practice and has given them much-needed confidence as they begin their career.
