Certified Phlebotomist

Weekends required (possibly every other weekend)
Position Summary
The Certified Phlebotomist performs venipuncture and specimen collection while ensuring accurate labeling, processing, and routing of laboratory specimens. This role supports laboratory order entry, chain-of-custody collections, breath alcohol testing, and related clerical workflows. The Phlebotomist provides excellent customer service and maintains inventory of collection supplies to support efficient lab operations.
Essential Functions
Review provider orders, register patients as needed, and enter appropriate lab orders per requisition
Verify patient identity using two patient identifiers prior to specimen collection
Collect blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick per policy
Collect urine, throat, nasal, and other specimens as ordered
Label specimens with required identifiers, date, time, and collector initials to ensure specimen integrity
Perform chain-of-custody urine drug screens and breath alcohol testing per policy
Coordinate therapeutic drug-monitoring collections with nursing staff to align dosing and draw times
Clarify unclear or unusual test orders by contacting providers, nursing staff, pathologists, or reference labs
Process and route specimens to appropriate internal departments or reference laboratories
Maintain par levels of phlebotomy supplies and complete weekly inventory
Participate in performance improvement initiatives and required education
Perform other duties as assigned

Environmental Exposures
Frequent contact with blood and bodily fluids
Occasional exposure to biohazardous waste, communicable diseases, chemicals, medications, dust, vapors, and latex
Education
High school diploma - Preferred
License/Certification
Phlebotomy certification - Preferred
Basic Life Support (BCLS) - Required if applicable per facility policy
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong critical thinking and decisive judgment
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
Effective English communication skills (read, write, speak)
Ability to quickly learn and navigate multiple software systems
Must complete Skills Competency Checklist within 90 days of hire
