Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the surgical services team and plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care. This position collaborates closely with surgeons, registered nurses, anesthesia providers, and other perioperative staff to support all phases of surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining sterile technique, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and ensuring that instruments, equipment, and supplies are available, functional, and accurately accounted for throughout the procedure.

Key Responsibilities
Prepare the operating room and surgical suite prior to procedures by setting up sterile fields, surgical instruments, equipment, supplies, and solutions in accordance with physician preference cards and departmental standards.
Inspect, test, and verify the functionality and sterility of surgical instruments and equipment prior to use to ensure patient safety.
Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and draping while maintaining strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control protocols.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, sponges, sutures, and supplies in a timely and accurate manner during surgical procedures.
Maintain accurate and ongoing counts of instruments, sponges, needles, and other surgical materials before, during, and after procedures to prevent retained surgical items.
Handle, label, and document surgical specimens accurately and ensure proper delivery to the laboratory in accordance with policy.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized operating room environment, including cleaning and turnover between cases in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
Collaborate with the surgical team to support efficient case flow and patient throughput.
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and performance improvement initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program preferred.
Experience: A minimum of six months of on-the-job experience in a surgical, perioperative, or healthcare setting required.
Certifications: National certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one month of hire.
