First Assist Surgical Tech - Cardiovascular Surgery

Summary: Provides direct assistance to the surgeon(s) during surgical procedures.

How you'll contribute
You'll make an impact by utilizing your specialized plan-of-care intervention and serving as a patient-care innovator. You will shape exceptional patient journeys every day and leverage your skills and our cutting-edge technology to directly impact patient wellbeing. The primary purpose of the First/Surgical Assist position is to assist the surgeon and RN's in operative procedures. The primary role of the First/Surgical Assist- will be to function as an assistant to the Surgeon.
Reports to: Clinical Nurse Manager/Director.

Qualifications and requirements
• Education: Associate's Degree Preferred; Graudate of a Program in Discipline Required
• License: Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS)
• One year of experience preferred.
• NBSTSA First Assist Certification on hire. Exempts surgical technologists practicing as of July 1, 2013
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Competency
Arterial Line Placement within 6 months of hire.
Essential Functions
Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment, when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning, and irrigation.
Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings, and securing of drainage systems.
Non-Essential Functions
1. Position serves both internal co-workers and external customers, clients, patients, contractors, and vendors.
2. Access to and/or works with sensitive and/or confidential information.
3. Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance (e.g., HIPAA). Skilled in the application of policies and procedures. Knowledge of Business Office Standards and Recommended Practices.
4. Perform other duties as assigned.
