How you'll contribute

An HVAC Technician who excels in this role:

  • Responsible for maintaining, inspecting and repairing domestic cold and hot water distribution systems, fixtures, sewer systems, medical gas systems, fire extinguishing systems, mechanical equipment and systems.

  • May perform tasks in other job functions of the plant operations and maintenance department to ensure the building is maintained in accordance with all policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for the installation of heating and air systems throughout the system, as well as preventive maintenance of the heating and air conditioning systems; ensures boilers and domestic water heaters are maintained in working order at all times.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on sophisticated equipment. Ensures equipment is in proper working order; repairs malfunctions as needed which may include fabricating and repairing refrigerant circuits, troubleshooting electrical failures, lubricating equipment and machinery, installing and removing pipes and parts, requiring electrical control failures, replacing defective compressor parts, etc.

  • Makes repairs which may involve charging units with refrigerant, adding or changing oil, replacing defective controls, cleaning of cooling coils, condensers and cooling towers, making adjustments for proper operation, etc.

  • Troubleshoots equipment problems that cannot be solved by Mechanic Is.

  • Informs supervisor of all equipment problems that adversely affect the continuity of service. Evaluates problems and provides the affected department with an estimate of downtime.

  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and parts, initiating requests for repair parts and equipment.

  • Completes required reports for each job assignment, detailing time and materials used for each completed task.

What we're looking for

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Graduate of trade school or technical college in plumbing or welding plus additional courses in air conditioning, heating, and welding. Additional requirements include:

  • Seven years minimum of maintenance mechanic experience desired, preferably in a hospital setting (may waive up to two years of experience by appropriate schooling in technical college, along with demonstrated proficiency in the completed courses.

  • Evidence of extensive technical or trade experience to include journeyman will be considered on a case by case basis.

  • Possess knowledge and understanding of all the following areas to include; operation and functions of boilers, chillers, refrigeration equipment, pumps, electrical systems, and basic maintenance functions such as painting and general building repairs.

  • Extensive cross training required and understanding of all major systems within the facilities which are maintained by other fields.

  • Ability to climb and work from ladders.

  • Ability to spend long periods of time standing/ walking /kneeling and squatting while working on equipment.

  • Must be able to bend and stoop and reach above shoulders.

  • Ability to read manuals and interpret written instructions is a must.

  • Work in hot humid equipment rooms.

  • Must have ability to use tools to make repairs to equipment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds
