Position Summary

• The Nurse Extern reports to the Unit Director and works under the supervision and direction of a Clinical Nurse Leader or Supervisor.
• This role is designed for graduates of an accredited school of nursing who are awaiting the NCLEX exam, which must be passed within 6 months of program completion. 
• The Nurse Extern practices under the guidance of an approved preceptor and may rotate between departments with approval from the applicable Directors and the CNO. 
• Responsibilities include basic data collection and documentation of patient progress in the medical record; observing, performing, and documenting approved nursing procedures (including administration of oxygen); attending to patient comfort needs; and carrying out specific unit-based duties as delegated by the RN.

Qualifications and requirements

• Education: Graduate of a Nursing Program with a minimum Associate Degree; BSN preferred. 
• Must take boards on first offering. Graduate nurses may engage in the supervised practice of professional nursing for up to 120 calendar days.
• Licenses: Arizona RN license within 6 months of hire date.
• Certifications: American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certification; American Heart Association ACLS/PALS required within 6 months of employment.

This role requires strong critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

The Nurse Extern must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
