Department/Unit Summary

The dialysis registered nurse works with Nephrology medical practitioners to provide high quality care to patients in need of dialysis related therapy, The dialysis nurse collaborates closely with medical practitioners, dieticians, social workers, and vascular access departments to meet with dialysis patient care needs.

Daily routine: Provide HD dialysis to ESRD and AKI patients using Tablo machine, over see patient during dialysis treatment, monitor lab work and report changes to physician, assist in arranging time for physician to see patient via tele-cart, clean and disinfect machines, and complete daily dialysis audit. 

PRN Status: Nurse will be used on days primarily when HD nurse is on vacation, sick or in case of an emergency. Most days will be scheduled. The nurse will be aware of what days will be need to be covered in advanced. However, sickness and emergencies do arise, and nurse would need to be available in those unscheduled events. 

Essential Functions

  • Perform appropriate patient assessments, evaluation, ongoing monitoring, and nursing interventions in accordance with organizational policies and procedures
  • Assist in preparing dialysis treatment areas with needed supplies prior to starting treatments and demonstrates knowledge of nursing procedures and nursing care as it relates to renal replacement therapy
  • Ensures dialysis machines and equipment are maintained in good working order per policy
  • Provides patient and family teaching as it pertains to the treatment plan, procedures, and preventative measures throughout the rehabilitation to stay and prior to discharge

Qualifications and requirements 
Applicants should have a current state RN license and possess an associate's degree from an accredited nursing school. Additional requirements include:

  • Graduate of an approved Bachelor or Associate school of nursing and a current state license to practice nursing
  • At least 2 years of current experience in the specialty is required
  • Current BLS is required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support preferred
  • Must be able to safely operate dialysis machines
