The Student Nurse Technician, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), will provide high-quality cost-effective care to an individual or group of patients. Under the supervision of an RN, the Student Nurse will perform a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living, which are tailored based on completed semesters in their academic program. Activities include taking and recording vital signs, collection and transporting specimens, performing hourly patient rounding, participation in Bedside Shift Report, assisting in the admission, transfer, and discharge processes, performing Medication Reconciliation, and educating patients on their plan of care, disease process, medications, and discharge instructions. The Student Nurse may perform certain procedures validated in their clinical program under the direct supervision of an RN.
Job Requirements
Minimum Education: The Nursing Student must have completed one semester of clinicals and be enrolled in an accredited nursing program at the Associate or Bachelor level. Experience with nursing fundamentals in lab and/or clinical setting as evidenced by completed nursing fundamentals skill check-off.
High school diploma or equivalent required. (Proof of higher education to be accepted for this requirement)
Required Skills: Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications are required
Minimum Work Experience: 1 year of experience as a nurse assistant, clinical services technician or other clinical position in a hospital setting is preferred.
Essential Functions:
Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, daily weights, and recording input/output measures. All data will be recorded timely and accurately in the electronic medical record. Provides ongoing assessments to determine the nursing care requirements using the nursing process. Assessments include physical, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of the past and present state of health. Provides information of changes in patient's condition to the supervising Registered Nurse in a timely manner. Develops and utilizes prioritizing and decision-making skills in planning and provision of patient care. Provides patient and family education regarding the hospitalization course, medication education, discharge instructions, and gathering data for the medication reconciliation. Provides documentation of the nursing process. Answers call lights, performs hourly rounding, and attend to/reports patients needs to the Registered Nurse. Performs designated sterile and aseptic procedures using proper technique (i.e., venipuncture and phlebotomy, IV insertions, and foley insertions) under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Assists with obtaining histories for admissions, transfers, and discharges under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Maintains appropriate safety precautions for patients (e.g., car seats, use of restraints, initiation of fall protocol, etc.) and documents interventions. Provides for safe transport of patients through institution. Appropriate measures are taken to escort patients into and out of the hospital Adheres to Infection Control Policy and OSHA Standards related to Standard Precautions. Reports faulty and/or dangerous equipment. Initiates appropriate communication documents (clinical or maintenance requests) in required reporting systems. Assists the care team during emergency situations; May perform chest compressions, maintain crowd control, or be used as a runner to gather equipment during a patient code. Assists with keeping patient rooms stocked with supplies.
Nonessential Functions: Must submit nursing school transcripts to include documentation of clinical skills.
