Certified Surgical Technologist
Location: Southern Tennessee Regional Health System - Winchester
Department: Surgery / Operating Room
Reports To: Director of Surgery / OR
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Position Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist maintains the sterile field in the operating room and remains constantly vigilant to ensure proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. This role functions as the sterile member of the surgical team, passing instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgical procedures while anticipating the needs of the surgeon and supporting optimal patient outcomes.

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
Years of relevant experience may be substituted for required education or certification in accordance with hospital policy.

Licensure and Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one month of hire.

Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment and take appropriate action.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Essential Functions

Pre-Operative Responsibilities
Helps set up the operating room and organizes the sterile table with surgical instruments, equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.
Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizers, surgical lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.
Ensures adequate supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during procedures.
Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites as appropriate.
Transports and positions patients on the operating table and applies sterile surgical drapes.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities
Performs surgical scrub and dons sterile attire to work within the sterile field.
Maintains strict aseptic technique throughout procedures.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, sutures, and sterile supplies efficiently and accurately.
Holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies dressings as directed.
Prepares, handles, and properly disposes of specimens for laboratory analysis.

Post-Operative Responsibilities
Cleans, disinfects, and restocks the operating room.
Ensures instruments and equipment are appropriately processed and stored.
Participates in room turnover to support surgical flow and efficiency.

Compliance and Standards
Adheres to The Joint Commission (TJC) professional standards and hospital policies.
Maintains compliance with HIPAA and all regulatory requirements.
Provides age-appropriate care for patients across the lifespan.
Attends required hospital in-service training and continuing education sessions.

Non-Essential Functions
Position serves internal co-workers and external customers, including patients, contractors, and vendors.
Accesses and works with sensitive and confidential information.
Demonstrates understanding of healthcare regulatory and compliance standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
