Job Summary:
The Switchboard (PBX) Operator is responsible for receiving and directing all incoming calls to the hospital, performing in-house paging, and managing emergency communication systems. This role ensures accurate and timely communication across the facility while maintaining updated records and supporting hospital operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receives and routes incoming calls to appropriate departments, extensions, or patient rooms
- Handles calls from in-house extensions and external callers
- Manages all emergency calls, codes, and paging systems
- Contacts appropriate personnel based on emergent or urgent needs
- Performs intercom paging and provides general information to callers
- Maintains updated switchboard files, including room numbers, admissions, and discharges
- Keeps employee and on-call contact information current for disaster procedures
- Contacts on-call personnel as requested, especially during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Takes and relays messages via paging, beeper systems, or direct calls
- Ensures all bulletin board information and disaster procedures are current
- Remains knowledgeable of all updates related to switchboard operations
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- This is a PRN position; hours and days may vary

- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Capability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Excellent communication and organizational skills

- Maintains confidentiality and accuracy of all communications
- Supports hospital-wide communication efforts
