Q&A with Dr. Annie Dong, Cardiac Electrophysiologist

What is a cardiac electrophysiologist, and what inspired you to pursue this specialty?
Dr. Dong: A cardiac electrophysiologist focuses on diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms. In my practice, that can mean using medications, minimally invasive procedures or implantable devices to help restore a normal rhythm.

I was drawn to electrophysiology because of mentors who inspired my interest in the heart’s electrical system. I enjoy educating patients and using advanced technologies to help people find relief from arrhythmias and improve their quality of life.

What types of patients do you most commonly treat?
Dr. Dong: I care for patients with many different heart rhythm disorders, but atrial fibrillation is by far the most common condition I see. I also treat patients with fast heart rhythms, slow heart rhythms, inherited rhythm disorders and those who have experienced cardiac arrest.

How do you determine the best treatment approach for a patient with AFib?
Dr. Dong: There is no one-size-fits-all treatment. I work closely with each patient to understand their symptoms, lifestyle goals and overall health.

For active and otherwise healthy patients, ablation is often one of the first treatment options we consider. For patients managing multiple medical conditions, we take a more individualized approach that prioritizes safety and long-term success.

What recent advances have had the greatest impact on patient care?
Dr. Dong: One of the most exciting advancements is pulsed field ablation, which has made AFib ablation procedures safer and more efficient.

We’ve also seen significant progress with leadless pacemakers. This technology helps reduce the risk of lead- or pocket-related complications and provides another valuable option for patients who require cardiac pacing.

What advice would you share with physicians interested in electrophysiology?
Dr. Dong: Electrophysiology is an exciting field that combines technology, procedural medicine, problem solving and long-term patient relationships. Every day offers opportunities to improve patients’ lives while working alongside talented multidisciplinary teams.

For physicians who enjoy innovation and continuous learning, it is an incredibly rewarding career path.
