Job Summary: A hospital carpenter assists with the day-to-day upkeep in maintenance and smooth operations of the hospital buildings and campus. You will need to be able to construct, make repairs, and maintain wooden structures like doors, counters, and cabinets, ensuring all work meets strict safety and hygiene standards for a healthcare environment. Key duties include reading blueprints, using hand and power tools, performing routine and emergency repairs, and collaborating with other maintenance staff and hospital departments to maintain a functional and safe facility.

Reports to: Director of Plant Operations

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Responsibilities

  • Construction and installation: Fabricate, assemble, and install new carpentry elements such as partitions, doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, and shelves.
  • Repair and maintenance: Perform daily corrective and preventive maintenance on all wooden fixtures and structures, including floors, walls, and furniture.
  • Safety and compliance: Ensure all work complies with hospital infection control, safety protocols, and building codes.
  • Tool and equipment management: Use and maintain a variety of hand and power tools, such as saws, sanders, and drills, and ensure all equipment is in good working order.
  • Project support: Assist with facility renovations and construction projects and may be involved in emergency repairs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other trades, maintenance staff, nurses, and facility managers to complete projects and address urgent needs.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time spent, often using a computerized maintenance management system.
  • On Call: Maintenance staff must be able to take on call duties in a rotation with other maintenance staff one week at a time per rotation.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in construction/carpentry is required. Additional trade experience (plumbing, electrical, etc.) is preferred

Skills:

  • Proficiency with hand and power tools and the ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and infection control protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and strong communication skills.
  • Experience in general carpentry, with a preference for experience in a healthcare or similar institutional setting.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting unassisted 50 pounds, standing for long periods and bending required frequently, 45-90 degree angles
