Position Summary

The RN in the Recovery Room provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the pre and post-operative course. The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients that are under the effects of anesthesia. The RN must have excellent observation skills, critical thinking skills, and be able to make quick and effective decisions.

Reports to: Director of Surgical Services

 

Responsibilities of the Position

Provides care and support to patients waking up from anesthesia: including monitoring vital signs, monitoring respiratory and cardiac status, pain management, nausea treatment, administering medications, monitoring surgical dressings/ wounds, and develops patient care plans.

Documents in the EMR the assessments, vital signs, and the progress of the patient.

Provides care and support for the patients that are in OR Holding including: ensuring the IV is patent, jewelry, dentures, and contact lenses are out, and ensure that only the hospital gown is on the patient.

Provide support to the anesthesia team and care to the patient during the insertion of nerve blocks.

Assures that the proper supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and stocked daily.

Provides follow up assessments for the patients by calling the patients the day after surgery.

Uses Universal Precautions and cleaning/disinfectant protocols.

Expectations of practice include: accountability; responsibility and authority for the practice of nursing; effective teamwork; delegation; communication; respect; personal development; and development of team members.

Participates in staff meetings and conflict resolution among the department.

Works cooperatively/ collaboratively with physicians and their practice to effectively manage the patients care and help to resolve concerns/ conflicts collaboratively with the physicians.

Participates in Briefs/ Debriefs/ Huddles.

Participates in various committees and Process Improvement Initiatives.

Other Tasks as assigned by the manager.

Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Education

Graduate of an accredited/ approved school of nursing with an associate’s degree in nursing is required. Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing is preferred.

 

Certifications/Licenses

A current North Carolina or compact stated Registered Nurse (RN) license is required upon hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) is required upon hire.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred.

Handle with care is preferred.

 

Required Skills

Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

 

Minimum Work Experience

One year of nursing experience is required, two years of experience is preferred.
