Job Summary

The Director of Nursing Throughput and Support Services manages throughput throughout the organization as well as the management of the flexible resource department (to include admission, discharge, and transfer nurse), nursing supervisors and capacity management coordinator. This Director role reports to the Chief Nursing Officer. The Director is accountable for high quality, safe and timely nursing care, competency of clinical staff, and appropriate resource management related to patient care and throughput metrics.

 

This Director will assume responsibility for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating nursing practice, resources and facility throughput. The Director will supervise and evaluate work activities of nursing personnel and provide clinical leadership and set strategic and long-term goals for the nursing staff. The Director will assess performance objectives for each area and organize, coordinate, develop and review policies, procedures, nursing protocols, and throughput metrics to meet all regulatory, compliance and quality care standards. The Director will facilitate the Throughput Committee and associated throughput work to improve overall facility throughput. The Director will attend Interdisciplinary Rounds to help coordinate and manage throughput. In addition, the Director will collaborate with the Transfer Center to accept patients needing specialty services or higher level of care.

 

The Director is responsible for the quality of care, operational and financial efficiency (budgeting) of the nursing unit/area. The Director will lead and professionally develop the nursing staff, providing performance goals, feedback and development opportunities. In addition, the Director is responsible for recruitment, hiring and training of personnel and will chair committees as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.
  • Directs and evaluates departmental operations, including patient care delivery, information technologies, service level determination, and complaint management, to achieve performance and quality control objectives.
  • Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.
  • Prepares, monitors, and evaluates departmental budgets, and ensures that the department operates in compliance with allocated funding. Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.
  • Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth. Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
  • Participates in patient rounding and Environment of Care Rounds.
  • Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state and local requirements and the TJC standards and or standards from other accrediting bodies.

Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree required.

Master's Degree preferred.

 

Minimum Work Experience

Minimum 5 years RN experience,

Minimum 2 years management experience preferred.

 

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Current RN license to practice in NC (NC licensure or multi-state (compact) license).Basic Life Support (BLS)Role assumes 24/7 responsibility of Director’s assigned areas.

Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Proven leadership ability and hospital operational ability.

Ability to serve as role model and advocate for the professional discipline of nursing.
