Job Summary

This position has access to and knowledge of extremely sensitive, private and confidential materials. Ability to maintain the highest standard is required with zero tolerance.

 

All the primary duties within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department and the Medical Center.

 

Works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager. The supervisor will be responsible for insuring the laboratory is operating in compliance with all accrediting agencies’ standards. Their responsibilities will be approximately 80% work performance and 20% management of operations and processes. Responsibilities include: establishing and maintaining accurate and compliant policies, procedures and protocols; supervision (clinical and administrative) of the sections; timely review of quality control and process management; instrument maintenance and problem solving. The supervisor will assist managers in evaluation of new instruments/equipment and laboratory procedures. The supervisor acts as a resource for patient caregivers, laboratory management, the medical director and the laboratory staff and serves as the Technical Supervisor/Consultant in the absence of management.

 

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina is a 355-bed acute care hospital, 81-bed Behavioral Health facility and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

 

Essential Functions

1. Performs clinical testing in the laboratory area according to SOP for maintenance, quality control and specimen handling and processing. Provides technical assistance to others as needed.

2. Organizes tasks, coordinates workflow pattern and the technical functions of the section and serves as a facilitator to staff in problem resolution.

3. Facilitates maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of quality laboratory testing through daily active review of test results and implementation of appropriate quality control and preventive maintenance procedures and performance improvement monitors. With the direction of the Technical Supervisor, includes observation of other staff to determine competency in performance of specific tasks.

4. Ensures laboratory compliance with all regulatory standards, FRMC and departmental rules and regulations as they relate to individual job tasks.

5. Compiles and maintains monthly QA/QC reports and maintains complete inspection ready documentation/record keeping. Trains and ensures all staff working in their area of responsibility provide the necessary QA/QC documentation during their time in the section.

6. Evaluates and solves problems related to the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical stages of laboratory testing. Reviews performance improvement issues on a routine basis in order to resolve issues, maintain quality and document performance of individuals of the laboratory. Ensures that staff supervised are familiar with performance improvement initiatives and goals for the department. Assesses the competency of individuals in the laboratory.

7. Assists with implementation and maintenance of employee and student training programs that focus on theory and techniques required in the laboratory.

8. Remains up to date on government regulations and compliance policies and procedures. Works with management to develop procedures and monitoring activities to insure appropriate systems are in place.

9. Participates in short-range planning, professional development of staff, implements strategic initiatives authorized by Manager, performs other duties as directed by the Manager.

10. Assists in maintaining appropriate inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.

11. Stays current on technological advances and scientific information in specific area of responsibility through participation in professional organizations and/or continuing education and through review of scientific journals. Serves as a resource to nurses, physicians, and staff.

12. Assists with reviewing, updating, and writing laboratory procedures; evaluates, documents and implements new procedural methods and instrumentation for the lab.

13. Serves as CLIA Technical Supervisor/Consultant and administrative representative in the absence of management.

14. Demonstrates FRMC Standards of Performance at all times. Contributes to the effectiveness of the department and medical center.

15. Provides information to other staff as needed. Must be familiar with, use and be able to train Laboratory and non-Laboratory staff in use of on-line manuals and use of the LIS. Provide appropriate orientation for newly hired staff.

16. Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills while performing duties. Must have strong customer service skills related to interacting with a diverse customer base.

17. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.

18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited laboratory training program – Required

Licenses/Certifications

  • MT (ASCP) or Equivalent required
  • Specialty Certification Preferred.

Minimum Work Experience

  • 3 years of experience as laboratory tech. - Required
