Job Summary

The Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologist is responsible for assisting physicians in performing minimally invasive, image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This position involves preparing patients, operating imaging equipment, and ensuring high-quality care in a fast-paced, highly specialized environment. The IR Technologist plays a critical role in maintaining safety, efficiency, and compliance with departmental standards.

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina is a 355-bed acute care hospital, 81-bed Behavioral Health facility and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Procedure Support:
    • Assist physicians with a wide range of IR procedures, including but not limited to angiography, embolization, biopsies, drain placements, and vascular interventions
    • Operate fluoroscopy equipment, ensuring optimal imaging quality for precise procedural guidance
    • Administer contrast media under the direction of a physician and monitor for potential adverse reactions
  • Patient Care:
    • Prepare patients for procedures, including explaining the process, positioning, and ensuring comfort
    • Monitor patient vital signs during procedures and alert the physician to any changes
    • Ensure proper post-procedure care and provide instructions to patients and families
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
    • Operate and maintain imaging equipment, ensuring it is functioning properly and meets regulatory standards
    • Perform daily quality assurance checks and promptly report any equipment issues
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Document patient information, procedure details, and imaging results in the electronic medical record (EMR) system and PACS
    • Adhere to all radiation safety protocols and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Stay updated on and comply with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Work collaboratively with radiologists, nurses, and other team members to ensure smooth and efficient procedures
    • Assist with scheduling, workflow management, and inventory control of IR-specific supplies
  • Education and Development:
    • Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with advances in IR technology and practices
    • Educate and mentor new staff, students, or interns as needed

Minimum Education

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology program
  • Current ARRT certification RT®
  • Registered as a Vascular Technologist preferred but registry eligible with 18 months of hire date
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

Minimum Work Experience

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist; prior experience in Interventional Radiology preferred
  • Strong understanding of cross-sectional anatomy, vascular structures, and procedural techniques

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in operating fluoroscopy and other imaging equipment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and the healthcare team
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe, sterile field during procedures
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and wear lead aprons or protective gear during procedures
  • Capable of lifting and positioning patients, as well as moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment and perform procedures with precision
