Position Summary

The Charge Nurse is responsible for the operations of the unit hired into or floated to as appropriate. This position manages bed control, staffing assignments, oversight and support of staff on duty. The person in this position should be able to manage patient flow during routine and stressful situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in leadership preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Oregon.
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
  • Obtain BLS certification at time of and maintain as current.
  • Obtain ACLS within 3 months of hire. Obtain TNCC and either ENPC or PALS within 6 months and maintain all as current
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training  completed with in three months of hire and maintain as current.
  • Two years relevant clinical experience in the Emergency Department
  • Competent with cardiac rhythm identification 

Essential Job Functions

  • Competent to step in and assist with all patient care.
  • Works in conjunction with the staffing coordinator as needed.
  • Ensures all staff receive required breaks and lunches.
  • Knowledgeable regarding the ONA contract, staffing laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversight and support to all staff including LPNs, CNA, Techs, Unit secretary or other ancillary staff.
  • Acts in a reasonable and fiscally responsible manner regarding staffing, utilization and department operations.
  • Assumes the responsibility and accountability for the delegation and coordination of patient care in the department
  • Encourages and enforces performance improvement initiatives including BSSR, BCMA, PDSA activities etc.
  • Be clinically knowledgeable and will perform the duties of the bedside nurse and assist with coverage as needed.
  • Ability to respond to emergent situations, as appropriate per department, including; obstetrical emergencies, trauma, code heart, stroke, code blue, rapid response and any other emergency.
  • Adept at medication reconciliation, medication management and medication safety.
  • Assists with resolving discrepancies in medication administration and wasting.
  • Provides leadership to the staff by working cooperatively with the nursing staff, assuring that all necessary resources are available, that policies and procedures are followed, and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ensures staffing needs are met based on department staffing plan
  • Provides real-time education and coaching for staff development
  • Assists in the direct operations of the department and in collaboration with other hospital leads and charge nurses on other units.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are followed
  • Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of the Nursing Process for patients for all age groups served in the department hired into
  • Completes daily assignments, manages staffing needs for current shift and next shift based on patient acuity and/or staffing matrix.
  • Assist with orientation of new staff and assistance with nurses unfamiliar with procedures or activities.
  • Act as role model to staff for promoting new ideas and projects

  • Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, Electronic medical records software
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize
  • Excellent Interpersonal and verbal communication
  • Creativity, problem analysis and decision making
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills
  • Promotes a positive environment and attitude
  • Must be fiscally responsible will all healthcare resources
