Overview:
From the beginning of a student's nursing career, the Lifepoint CKY Student Nurse Externship Program aspires to motivate and assist the extern to REACH their full potential! The program is designed to serve entry level students currently enrolled in an accredited registered nursing program.
The Student Nurse Extern will build skills in critical thinking, time-management, communication, competence and confidence in the clinical setting.
You will work side-by-side with a registered nurse mentor providing hands-on quality patient care!
Position Summary:
Assists the registered nurse in the practice of professional nursing by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan.
Provide basic patient care; Obtain vital signs to include temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, intake-output measurements, blood glucose point-of-care measurement, and documents per unit protocol.
Assists the R.N. with the patient's daily living activities according to the patient's needs in a timely manner, following departmental procedures.
Performs designated procedures as needed and assists the R.N. with examinations and procedures according to departmental policy.
Accurately observes, records, and reports to the R.N. all patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress in a timely manner.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience:
Documentation of the student's skills performance evaluation or an official letter from the nursing program documenting the specific skills that the student has successfully completed in his/her nursing program to verify the student is individually educationally prepared and has demonstrated clinical competence to perform delegated tasks/acts.
Able to work collaboratively to achieve desired department, facility, and regional results.
Skilled and articulate in both verbal and written communication.
Demonstrates abilities in clinical reasoning and problem-solving.
Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Must be able to work a 12-hour shift (7a-7p or 7p-7a) with a mentor. The extern will be required to fulfill four shifts within a 6-week scheduling period.
