Reports To: Registered Nurse / Unit Leadership

About the Role

Join Southern Tennessee Regional Health System - Pulaski as a Nurse Extern and gain hands-on clinical experience while completing your nursing education.
This role is designed to help you bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice - giving you the opportunity to work under the direct supervision of experienced RNs while building the confidence and skills needed for your future nursing career.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct observation and basic patient care under RN supervision

• Perform 1:1 observation as ordered, maintaining continuous presence or line-of-sight monitoring

• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and obtain vital signs

• Accurately document care and observations in the medical record

• Report changes in patient condition to the assigned RN promptly

• Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment for patients and staff

• Uphold all privacy and confidentiality standards in compliance with facility policies

Qualifications

• Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and in good academic standing

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred

  • Completion of Handle With Care training within 30 days of hire

• Preferred:

  • At least one year of healthcare experience (CNA, PCT, EMT, or similar role)

Training & Support

• Comprehensive unit-based orientation with an assigned RN preceptor

• Ongoing skills development opportunities to strengthen clinical judgment

• Exposure to the hospital's safety culture and multidisciplinary team collaboration

• Continuous feedback and mentorship to support growth into a Nurse Graduate or RN role
