Position Summary:
Sovah Martinsville is seeking a Paramedic to perform direct patient care under the direction of an emergency provider. The Paramedic will also perform administrative, clerical, and clinical duties as assigned by a Registered Nurse and comply with all policies and procedures of Sovah Health.
As a member of the Emergency Department Team, the essential duties and responsibilities of a Paramedic include:
• Assists the Registered Nurse as directed with safe and effective patient care of all age groups
• Transports patients using a wheelchair or stretcher within the hospital and to and from personal vehicles
• Obtains/records vital signs, including orthostatic vital signs
• Documents patients' stated complaint, past medical history, current medications, and reported allergies
• Monitors oxygen saturation by pulse oximeter on an intermittent and continuous basis
• Initiates cardiac monitoring; demonstrates ability to detect dysrhythmias and notifies registered nurse
• Performs 12-lead electrocardiograms
• Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Initiates oxygen therapy (nasal cannula, mask, and bag-valve-mask ventilation) per protocol
• Performs oral, nasal, and ET tube suctioning
• Performs phlebotomy; sets up for, collects, and labels ordered specimens
• Initiates and maintains peripheral IV access and external jugular IV access as ordered and supervised by the physician
• Establishes intraosseous access as directed by a physician
• Inserts urinary catheters and gastric tubes (NG/OG) as ordered
• Applies orthopedic appliances, including but not limited to: Hare traction, clavicle straps, cervical collars, ace wraps, ankle air splints, knee immobilizers, slings, and simple splints
• Sizes crutches and teaches crutch walking
• Assists in C-spine immobilization/stabilization, placing patient on backboard or removing from backboard while maintaining proper cervical alignment
• Assists with equipment setup to include, but not limited to: Chest-tube drainage system, Rapid infusion/fluid warmer, Bair Hugger, gastric lavage
• Assists in the application of restraints
• Transports patients, including those on continuous cardiac monitoring, to other departments within the facility
• Assists in monitoring patients receiving conscious sedation
• Performs post-mortem care
• In resuscitative situations, performs duties as ordered under the direction and supervision, including endotracheal intubation
• In resuscitative situations, administers medications according to ACLS and PALS protocols as ordered by a physician
• Escorts patients to examination rooms and prepares patients for evaluation; facilitates transfer of care between the EMS providers and ED staff
• Assists physicians and/or advanced practice providers with examinations and procedures (e.g., suturing, lumbar punctures, pelvic exams)
• Maintains patient safety and confidentiality at all times
• Documents data collected/treatments performed in the computer documentation system
• Assists with sterile procedures, including but not limited to basic wound care, dressing removal, washing and irrigating wounds, and applying dressings
• Monitors assigned patients and reports unusual conditions to the RN or ED provider
• Adheres to sterile technique standards, universal precautions related to safe handling of hazardous wastes, and body substance precautions
• Performs all Emergency Department-approved Point of Care Testing
• Performs clerical duties as assigned by a registered nurse.
• Performs skills as listed on the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Scope of Practice - Procedures for EMS Personnel under the direction and supervision of a provider.
• Administer medication as listed on the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services Scope of Practice - Formulary for EMS Personnel under the direction and supervision of a provider.
• Other duties as assigned within the scope of practice and competency.
Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Graduate of an EMT Paramedic program.
Required Skills:
-
Ability to respond quickly and calmly under stressful or emergency.
Requires flexibility in scheduling with the ability to work all shift patterns, including weekends and holidays, to ensure continuity of care and nursing coverage for the patients of Sovah Health Danville on all units.
Required Certifications/Licenses:
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) is required by the American Heart Association required.

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required by the American Heart Association required.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required within 90 days of hire.

Current licensure by the State of Virginia as an EMT-Paramedic.
Minimum Work Experience:
-
One year of field experience as a Paramedic is required.
