Join a close-knit Patient Access team where teamwork, compassion, and exceptional customer service are at the center of the patient experience. Our ER registrars work alongside nursing staff, providers, and other clinical team members in a fast-paced environment where every day is different. We invest in hands-on training and continued development, with opportunities for experienced registrars to expand their skills through our tiered advancement program and learn additional areas of Patient Access.

 

How you'll contribute  

A Patient Access Representative who excels in this role: 

  • Complete accurate and timely patient registration for Emergency Department visits, direct admissions, and other assigned patient access services.

  • Obtain and accurately enter patient demographic, insurance, billing, and other required information into the registration system.

  • Perform bedside registration, entering patient rooms to complete the registration process while patients are receiving care.

  • Welcome and check in patients arriving to the Emergency Department while providing a professional, compassionate first impression of the hospital.

  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits and ensure required information is captured accurately.

  • Present patient estimates and discuss financial responsibility, including collecting applicable co-pays, deductibles, and other patient liabilities at the bedside.

  • Clearly explain required registration forms, documents, and patient information.

  • Answer incoming telephone calls and assist patients, families, clinical staff, and other departments as appropriate.

  • Support direct admissions, including traveling to inpatient nursing floors to complete patient registration when needed.

  • Work collaboratively with nursing staff, providers, other clinical team members, and fellow Patient Access staff to support an efficient patient experience.

  • Navigate multiple computer applications and websites simultaneously while managing patient-facing responsibilities, telephone calls, and competing priorities.

  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality throughout all registration and financial interactions.

  • Rotate between front-desk/check-in and bedside registration responsibilities based on departmental coverage assignments.

  • Cross-train to provide coverage at both the main Emergency Department at Sumner Regional Medical Center and Sumner Station, the freestanding Emergency Department.

  • Work effectively in a fast-paced Emergency Department environment with exposure to medical situations, bodily fluids, odors, and other conditions associated with direct interaction in patient-care areas.

  • Participate in required education, training, performance improvement activities, and other duties as assigned.

 

What we're looking for 
Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Additional requirements include: 

Required

  • Strong customer service skills with a friendly, professional, and empathetic approach to patients and families.

  • Strong computer and typing skills with the ability to comfortably navigate multiple applications, websites, and computer screens.

  • Ability to multitask and remain organized while managing patients, telephone calls, computer work, and competing priorities.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress Emergency Department environment.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, nursing staff, providers, and other hospital team members.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately collect and enter patient and insurance information.

  • Ability to have professional financial conversations with patients, including presenting estimates and requesting applicable patient payments.

  • Demonstrated teamwork, dependability, and punctuality.

  • Ability and willingness to work the assigned 7-on/7-off schedule, including every other weekend and holidays that fall within the scheduled rotation.

  • Ability to participate in the department's required on-call rotation.

  • Willingness to cross-train and provide coverage at both Sumner Regional Medical Center and Sumner Station.

  • Comfortable entering patient-care areas and completing bedside registration with potential exposure to bodily fluids, odors, and other conditions associated with an Emergency Department.

Preferred

  • Previous healthcare front-office, patient registration, or medical office experience.

  • Previous Emergency Department registration experience.

  • Familiarity with health insurance, eligibility verification, patient estimates, or point-of-service collections.

  • Previous experience working in a high-volume customer service or healthcare environment.

  • Meditech and/or MEDHOST experience is helpful but not required.

 

Schedule: 4:30 PM-3:00 AM, 7 days on / 7 days off, Thursday-Wednesday
