Position Summary:

The Coder is a non-exempt position responsible for applying the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing. This role requires critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, particularly in a high-pressure environment where appropriate action must be taken.
Essential functions include assigning accurate ICD diagnosis codes and CPT/HCPCS codes to records using compliant documentation. The Coder applies knowledge of coding guidelines to select the appropriate diagnosis codes and utilizes available research and reference tools to understand the disease process and diagnosis. This position also involves interpreting physician documentation in accordance with coding guidelines and obtaining clarification from physicians when record documentation is vague or ambiguous. To ensure up-to-date knowledge and skills, the Coder engages in continuing education activities as outlined in the HIM.COD.003 policy and reviews relevant literature.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Graduate of a Program in Discipline Required 
  • Certified Coder Certification required
