Position Summary:
The Lead Radiation Therapist, reporting to the Director of Radiation Oncology, is a non-exempt position with responsibilities including overseeing daily departmental activities, improving technical and quality assurance programs, and ensuring the efficient operation of treatment delivery and simulation areas. This role involves providing radiation therapy to patients as prescribed, preparing equipment, maintaining records, and assisting with dosimetry procedures. The Lead Radiation Therapist is responsible for troubleshooting machine faults, maintaining service logs, ensuring QA procedures are performed, and managing departmental supplies. As a Super User for the Mosaiq system, the Lead Therapist ensures the database is updated, troubleshoots software issues, trains staff, assists with QA reporting, and resolves issues with the software. The Lead Therapist also ensures the linear accelerator and simulator are properly maintained, assists with dosimetry tasks, manages departmental charges, and assists with insurance authorizations. They assume a supervisory role in the Director's absence, provide ongoing instruction to staff, and maintain departmental policies. The position requires critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. The Lead Therapist is expected to have strong documentation skills, be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy and may assist with administrative tasks as needed. Additional duties include thoroughly reviewing prescriptions, diagnoses, patient charts, and identification; preparing devices for immobilization, treatment, and protection; performing simulation and radiation treatment procedures per the Radiation Oncologist’s instructions; entering correct data into the linac computer system; positioning and delivering radiation treatments according to prescriptions; monitoring and reassuring patients during treatment; reporting unusual reactions to the Radiation Oncologist; maintaining records and reports; following radiation protection principles for patients, self, and others; entering charges into the hospital computer system; performing and assisting with Q.C./P.I. activities; performing mold room operations; assisting in the reception area if needed; and transporting inpatients to and from the department. Other duties may be assigned as requested by the Director of Oncology Services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree required; Graduate of a Program in Discipline Required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • Registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy. 
  • For a new hire that has graduated from an accredited program and is registry-eligible one year will be given from hire date to complete registration. 
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) Certified
