Position Summary:
This is a PRN Position
This is a non-exempt position that assists physicians in the performance of cardiac catheterization procedures, invasive cardiac, electrophysiology, and vascular procedures, to include call-back rotations for RNs in diagnostic cardiology, care, and maintenance of equipment and delivers appropriate patient care. Work is of a highly confidential nature.
Essential Functions
1. Assists and coordinates the daily flow of patients needing stress testing, echocardiograms, procedures performed in the cath lab (LHC, RHC, peripheral/Coronary Interventions), Pericardiocentesis, IABP management, temporary pacemaker insertions, and tee/cardioversions.
2. Performs cardiac catheterization procedures and examinations.
Sets up equipment, instruments, and supplies
Establishes and maintains sterile field
Assists physicians in pre-catheterization work-up of patients
Lifts, moves, and positions patients
Starts and manages IVs
Monitors and assesses patient vital signs and condition
Adjusts and controls equipment
Administers the correct procedure to the correct patient, without noted exception.
Selects and applies appropriate procedures, techniques, and communications based on the age and developmental status of patients.
Ensures that an appropriate history and/or examination data is taken and that contraindicating conditions are identified and communicated to the physician prior to the initiation of the procedure
Follows established procedures and techniques for the administration of medications, needle localizations, the drawing of blood and other invasive procedures.
When assisting with procedures, ensures that the sterile field is properly established and maintained and that gowning is properly accomplished in accordance with procedure.
Accurately starts, monitors and manages intravenously delivered fluids in accordance with prescribed policy, procedure and technique.
When assisting with procedures, performs an accurate initial count of all supplies and instruments, and participates in other pre-operative preparations with regard to supplies and equipment required for the procedure, in accordance with established procedure and time frames.
When assisting with procedures, properly positions and drapes patient for procedure in accordance with established procedure.
When assisting with procedures, effectively performs or coordinates errands, retrieval of needed items and communications during procedures.
When assisting with procedures, accounts for, and examines all instruments and supplies used, reporting any items missing or unaccounted for, prior to release of patient from procedure room and physician's presence, and ensuring removal of any damaged or malfunctioning items found before, during or after procedure.
When assisting with procedures, ensures that patient immobilization, positioning and shielding techniques are properly employed based on the procedure.
When assisting with procedures, ensures the safety of the patient during procedure, so that no patient condition deteriorates due to inadequate circulation, injury or circumstances over which the patient has no control.
Accurately follows instructions and/or carries out established procedures and protocols, when assisting physicians with procedures and treatments.
Effectively adjusts and controls equipment to produce quality images, and prepares results for interpretation.
Monitors patient condition and properly evaluates to determine situations when Physician intervention is necessary constantly throughout procedure/examination.
Promptly and appropriately responds in accordance with procedure or established protocol in emergency or STAT situations.
3. Coordinates, collaborates or communicates with physicians, departmental staff, nursing staff and patients.
Ensures that any preparatory instructions are relayed to nursing staff for inpatients and to outpatients on a timely basis, so that procedures are not delayed due to inadequate or untimely preparation.
b. Patiently and clearly explains purpose and nature of exam/procedure to patient prior to administration, so as to minimize anxiety and facilitate cooperation.
c. Ensures that patient questions and concerns are satisfactorily addressed, notifying physician when this cannot be accomplished, prior to the initiation of the procedure.
d. Keeps appropriate physician advised on all aspects of care provided to their patients, ensuring prompt notification when problems, or potential problems arise.
e. Appropriately coordinates, or collaborates on the provision of care with physicians, patient care providers and departmental staff, ensuring that communications are clear and continuous, and that time factors are adequately addressed.
4. Maintains records of examination and other patient information.
a. Required documentation regarding patient or procedures is accurate, complete, legible, properly edited and includes appropriate terminology.
b. Required documentation is completed before the end of the shift for patients seen during the shift.
5. Sets up, utilizes and/or maintains equipment, supplies and work areas.
a. Routinely checks equipment for proper operation, and immediate removes malfunctioning equipment from patient use and reports it appropriate person, when found.
b. Sets up, operates and maintains equipment in accordance with specifications or procedure and time frames.
c. Effectively accomplishes and documents quality control checks and procedures, in accordance with procedure and time frames.
d. Sets up for procedures quickly and without assistance.
e. Utilizes supplies and equipment in an economical and efficiency manner, so that waste is avoided.
f. Helps to keep designated work and patient care areas neatly organized, safe, clean and stocked with par levels of designated supplies.
6. Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Any necessary ADA accommodations will be evaluated on a case by case basis, based on any applicable restrictions that may apply to an employee/applicant. Attached to the position description is a Physical Demands Analysis sheet that will assist management in making any necessary accommodations for either “Essential” or “Non Essential” duties, whether the disability is permanent or temporary.
In addition to the above responsibilities the Registered Nurse is also responsible for the following:
1. Assesses the patient's condition and nursing needs; sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing interventions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative needs of the patient, including post discharge procedure education.
a. Initiates admission chief complaint assessment documentation and takes vital signs immediately upon admission.
b. Makes complete and appropriate nursing assessment upon patient admission, and as frequently as warranted by patient's condition, ensuring documented data is amended or confirmed at least once each hour until patient is released from the department.
c. Develops individualized nursing care plan on assigned patients within 15 minutes of arrival to the department ensuring inclusion of appropriate nursing interventions based on the assessment, expected outcomes following intervention, utilization of available resources, efforts for inclusion of patient/family from initiation of plan through discharge from the department.
2. Implements care plans and makes revisions accordingly.
a. Patient care provided correlates to the nursing care plan, as documented.
b. Updates, modifies or reviews all aspects of the care plan to appropriately reflect the status of patient needs and acuity at least each hour until patient is released from the department.
c. Relates observations and reactions regarding patients to the care plan developed.
3. Coordinates patient care.
a. Ensures that nursing and physician orders are carried out in accordance with established time frames.
b. Ensures that any patient preparatory activities are accomplished in accordance with procedure, so that no procedures/examinations have to be delayed.
c. Ensures that communications are timely, so that all involved have adequate time to prepare.
d. Provides thorough, but concise, reports to the next care provider in the chain of custody, where applicable.
e. Ensures that any required releases or consents are properly completed and signed in accordance with procedure.
4. Performs clinical and technical procedures.
5. Communicates with selected patients and oversees the provision of care for their personal needs.
Effectively explains the purpose and nature of therapy, treatments or procedures to the patient prior to administration, so as to minimize anxiety and maximize cooperation.
Ensures continuous communications with the patient and family, so that they are aware of actions being taken, status of activities, time frames involved, and reasons for any delays or changes in care.
Ensures that patients' concerns and wishes regarding their own care are communicated to the attending physician and other pertinent care providers.
Utilizes professionally accepted methods and techniques for informing, counseling, or consoling patients or their families.
Ensures that patient's needs with respect to hygiene, ambulation, privacy, and comfort are met on an on-going basis, personally attending to needs as warranted, to ensure quality, timeliness or continuity of care.
6. Provides pre/post procedure instruction and education.
7. Evaluates patient care outcomes.
a. Performs post-discharge evaluations after designated procedures, ensuring appropriate intervention when problems or abnormalities are detected.
b. Effectively researches and resolves patient care problems, and routinely provides input into the establishment of unit procedures/policy in response to situations or patient care problems.
c. Routinely evaluates patient outcomes, and discusses unusual or difficult patient care experiences with team members in an effort to improve patient care planning and care provided.
8. Documents nursing observations, assessments, medications, treatments and other care given
a. Required documentation is accurate, complete, timely, legible, properly edited and reflects proper use of terminology.
Ensures that any necessary information and releases are obtained in accordance with procedure and time frames.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required Education:
An Associate’s degree is Required
Cardiovascular Technologist and Technician
Applicant must have completed an associate or bachelor's degree in Radiology Sciences, Cardiovascular Technology, or Nursing with current licensure or registration (as appropriate) in the relevant field required, or equivalent experience. RN, R.T. (R) (CV) or (CI) or (VI), or RCIS credential required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire. The employee must have the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. BLS is required, or obtained within the first week of hire. ACLS is required or must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire.
