Requirements:

  • Current Arkansas Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Active BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC; obtains these certifications within 6 months of hire if not active.
  • Minimal 3-5 years' experience in bedside care of traumatically injured patients in the acute care setting.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Completion of the American Trauma Society’s Trauma Registrar Course, ICD-10 Coding Course, the Association of the Advancement of Automotive Medicine’s Injury Scaling (AAIS) Course, and Society of Trauma Nurses (STN)’s TOPIC Course within one year of hire.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the discretion and supervision of the Trauma Program Manager (TPM) and the Trauma Medical Director (TMD), the Trauma Nurse Registrar is responsible for:

  • Driving the organization’s Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Plan (PIPS).
  • Identifying patients that meet the Arkansas Trauma Registry Inclusion Criteria, as defined by the Arkansas Trauma Rules and Regulations, utilizing all available resources, in accordance with national, state, local, and organizational rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Abstracting accurate, thorough, and high-quality data from the EMR into the Trauma Registry, for each patient identified and assigned to them.
  • Maintains the overall integrity of the Trauma Registry, in accordance with the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) requirements and standards.
  • Provides data analysis to support trauma services and hospital leadership in adjusting the trauma protocols and guidelines and supports injury and violence prevention (IVP) and quality initiatives for our local and regional communities.
  • Identifying, analyzing, and reporting of all state mandated audit filters and clinical indicators, patient safety, and quality concerns, both on a case-to-case and aggregate basis, to the TPM.
  • Participates in Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) data validation, feedback, and corrective actions, and obtaining loop closure.
  • Assists in improving and sustaining clinical excellence through staff in-services, training, mock drills, and staff orientation to enhance employee's overall performance and professional competency and knowledge of trauma nursing services policies, procedures, PI initiatives, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in daily rounding of nursing and patient care areas that manage the care for the traumatically injured patient.
  • Assesses the environmental, personnel, internal operations, and processes to determine approaches and practices that will coordinate people, equipment, and material to achieve quality and efficient operations.
  • Attends and participates in the organization’s Trauma Program Operations Committee meeting, Trauma Peer Review meetings, and any other local, state, and regional meetings and conferences as directed.
  • Serves as a resource and liaison between trauma services and other departments within the healthcare facility, and with external agencies, to ensure effective communication and coordination of care.
  • Other and additional tasks and duties as assigned.

Skills

  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer software, including word processing, spread sheets, graphics, messaging (E-Mail), state databases, report writers, and coding software.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Knowledge of Trauma Registry maintenance and the Arkansas Trauma Rules and Regulations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of data abstraction techniques.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 coding preferred.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and recommend improvement initiatives to collecting, maintaining, and reporting of patient information.
  • Ability to establish productive relationships with a wide variety of health care professionals.
  • One (1) year coding experience OR previous experience working with trauma and/or stroke registry databases and handling medical information in a health care setting.
