What you’ll do:

Reporting to the Vice President of Safety and Security, the Director of Safety and Security - Behavioral Health plays a critical role in overseeing the safety and security operations across Lifepoint's Behavioral Health facilities. This position emphasizes teaching and overseeing de-escalation and physical intervention training, as well as reviewing use-of-force incidents and establishing benchmarks for training competency to ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.

The Director will work closely with Hospital Support Center (HSC) and facility leadership, providing innovative security management solutions to reduce risks and safeguard staff, patients, and assets. This role also involves serving as a subject matter expert in de-escalation and physical intervention strategies, ensuring that security practices are aligned with behavioral health best practices and patient care goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Assist the Vice President of Safety and Security in defining and executing a strategic vision for safety and security in behavioral health settings, aligning with Lifepoint’s risk management framework and patient-centered care principles.
  • Develop and promote a culture of safety where security operations are seamlessly integrated into patient care processes, emphasizing empathy, respect, and professionalism.
  • Training & Development: Lead, teach, and oversee comprehensive de-escalation and physical intervention training programs tailored to behavioral health settings.
  • Develop benchmarks for training competency, ensuring staff proficiency and adherence to evidence-based practices.
  • Regularly review training content and methodologies to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
  • Incident Management & Compliance: Review and investigate use-of-force incidents, identifying trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish protocols for consistent documentation and analysis of incidents to inform training and policy adjustments.
  • Collaborate with Regulatory and Accreditation teams to ensure compliance with CMS, TJC, and other applicable standards.
  • Risk Assessment & Emergency Preparedness: Conduct regular facility risk assessments, focusing on behavioral health-specific challenges, such as workplace violence and patient elopement.
  • Develop and implement security response plans, including emergency drills (e.g., lockdowns, patient abductions) tailored to behavioral health scenarios.
  • Program Management: Direct and coordinate Lifepoint’s behavioral health physical security program, including policy development, awareness campaigns, and safety initiatives.
  • Ensure effective threat management, emergency response, and visitor management practices across all facilities.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and ensure the quality and competency of contracted security personnel.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Partner with Patient Safety, Regulatory and Accreditation, Employee Health and Safety, Clinical Services, and Facility Design teams to ensure security measures are integrated into all operational areas.
  • Act as a liaison with local law enforcement, first responders, and federal agencies to address facility-specific safety concerns and ensure a coordinated response to incidents.
  • Performance Measurement & Continuous Improvement: Develop and monitor metrics to measure the effectiveness of security training programs and the overall safety and security program.
  • Use data-driven insights to continuously improve policies, procedures, and training standards.

Key Success Metrics:

  • Implementation of effective de-escalation and physical intervention training programs.
  • Reduction in use-of-force incidents and workplace violence events.
  • Achievement of high training competency scores among staff.
  • Compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  • Enhanced safety and security metrics aligned with behavioral health best practices.

What you’ll need:

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in related field or a combination of education and equivalent relevant experience in the security domain.

 Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in a leadership role is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in security, military, law enforcement and/or public safety is required.
  • Preferred experience in healthcare operations.
  • Preferred certifications: CHSP, CHFM, or POST.
  • Proficiency in mathematical, all Microsoft Office 365 products, and complex communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated independence in judgment and project management skills.
