Conemaugh Miners Medical Center is seeking a Relief - Student Nurse Extern. With the direction of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with other members of the Patient Care Team, assists with the direct day-to-day care of patients and families. Performs a variety of patient care duties under the direction of the RN.  Practices to the fullest extent of his/her abilities in accordance with organizational policies and within legal and regulatory parameters.  Provides population specific care to meet the developmental needs of those patients we serve.

Essential Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the RN Preceptor particularly those related to assessment, judgment and teaching:

  • Participates in Patient Care Team’s delivery of personalized, efficient care with respect for patient’s spiritual and cultural differences.
  • Assist with patient assessment throughout patient stay and participates in discharge planning while maintaining a therapeutic partnership with patient, family and care givers.
  • Assist with individualized patient plan of care (IPOC).
  • Reports patient’s status refers problems when necessary and anticipates situations that prevent/minimize adverse outcomes or less than optimal outcomes.
  • Follows the established plan of care and collaborates with members of the Patient Care Team as needed.  Including RN’s, LPN’s, Nursing Assistants, Unit Clerks and Ancillary Departments.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patients, hospital and employee-related information.
  • Observes, reports/documents accurately and concisely personalized patient behavior including physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and refers problems when beyond the scope of his/her ability.
  • Provides emotional support for patients and families.
  • Assists with bathing and other personal hygiene needs.
  • Assists patients with eating.
  • Orients patient and family to room, call bell and unit.
  • Assists in providing patient treatments and diagnostic procedures as directed.
  • Records I&O, and vital signs in EPIC.
  • Transports patients via appropriate means in a safe, dignified manner.
  • Responds to patient, family and visitors' questions/concerns in a courteous helpful timely manner and/or refers to appropriate staff member if unable to provide an answer.
  • Assists members of the care team in implementing the plan of care.
  • Collects specimens as directed. 
  • Maintains our CARING values of: Compassion, Always put the patient first, Respect, Innovation, No Excuses, and Great Attitude.
  • Performs 5 moments of hand hygiene.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; senior student in good standing at College or School of Nursing with a GPA 3.0 or greater is required. 
  • Two letters of recommendations from current nursing instructors are required. 
  • Entering senior year of college or nursing school is required. 
  • CPR is required. 

Skills & Abilities: 

  • Skilled at understanding and applying patient age specific needs.
  • Skilled at demonstrating and implementing all core and job specific competencies/behaviors.
  • Ability to apply technical skills and demonstrates appropriate interpersonal skills.
