Position Summary

Directs the department's activities and resources to achieve departmental and organizational objectives. The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for the overall functioning of the HIM Department to ensure that the department meets JCAHO, state and federal requirements; also responsible for safeguarding of patient medical records; provides leadership for the department. The HIM Director maintains quality and ethical coding standards through DRG validation. Directs, coordinates, implements, trains, and evaluates the Health Information Management Analysts, HIM Specialists, Release of Information Specialist, and Coders. Directs, coordinates, and monitors the quality of documentation, signatures, and scanned documentation; monitors performance and quality; plans, organizes, manages and facilitates various budgets including: Capital Budget, Operating Budget, and Personnel Budget. Maintain knowledge in areas of compliance, government rules and regulations, CMS, HIPAA, RAC, TJC, OIG, LCD, and NCD's.

Responsibilities of the Position

Develops and implements departmental goals, plans, and standards consistent with the clinical, administrative, legal, and ethical requirements/objectives of the organization.

Plans and monitors staffing activities, including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions, and continuing education initiatives.

Coordinates and oversees all aspects of chart analysis, scanning, Release of Information, and Coding.

Plays an active role in the Revenue Cycle.

Directs the Health Information Management (HIM) department's activities and resources to achieve departmental and organizational objectives.

Coordinates and directs internal/external audits.

Creates and fosters an environment that encourages professional growth.

Performance Improvement PSCQC Data reviews and presentations.

Plays an active role in HARMs Committee.

Chairs Forms Committee.

Assists physicians in establishing policies for medical records.

Assists physicians by providing statistical data to assist with credentialing.

Provides in-service educational programs and training to department staff, hospital personnel and physicians/mid-levels as needed.

Implement processes and systems to ensure accurate and complete medical record documentation.

Work with physicians to improve the quality of documentation.

Oversee coding staff to ensure accurate coding for reimbursement and clinical care.

Ensure compliance with state and federal laws and standards related to privacy, security, and record completion.

Track and trend audits and denials from third-party payers and auditors.

Prepare and analyze clinical data for research purposes, process improvement, utilization management, mandatory reporting, and more.

Participate in committees to address topics such as ICD-10, electronic health record implementation, and process improvement.

Prepare HIM department budgets.

Perform employee evaluations.

Analyze clinical and financial data to look for trends and opportunities for process improvement.

Maintains quality and ethical coding standards through DRG validation.

Directs, coordinates, implements, trains, and evaluates the HIM Department.

Coordinates, and monitors the quality of documentation, signatures, and scanned documentation.

Monitors performance and quality; plans, organizes, manages and facilitates various budgets including: Capital Budget, Operating Budget, and Personnel Budget.

Maintain knowledge in areas of compliance, government rules and regulations, CMS, HIPAA, RAC, TJC, OIG, LCD, and NCD's.

Other duties as assigned.


Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management is required.

Required Skills
Certification: RHIT or RHIA is preferred.

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

 

Minimum Work Experience

At least three years of experience as Health Information Management at a supervisory level in an acute care is required.

Active member of AHIMA is preferred.
