Job Summary

Evaluates the functional abilities of each patients and designs and facilitates activity and psycho-educational groups to aid in the development and improvement in the social, physical, cognitive and emotional lives of patients. Works cooperatively with other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to formulate individualized plans of treatment, re-assessing the patient’s progress at regular intervals to ensure maximum therapeutic benefit and supporting findings with written documentation.

Frye Regional Medical Center, located in the beautiful foothills of North Carolina is a 355-bed acute care hospital, 81-bed Behavioral Health facility and more than 70 primary and specialty care providers.

Essential Functions

  • In collaboration with the Lead Counselor – Behavioral Health Social Worker, provides oversight of recreation therapy activities and the Health Educators.
  • Conducts assessments and establishes recreation therapy goals and objectives to meet the individual needs of patients.
  • Evaluates each patient’s progress and effectiveness of recreational therapy interventions.
  • Coordinates and facilitates recreation therapy groups to address individualized needs of patients.
  • Provides patient and patient’s family with information regarding leisure lifestyles and creates and awareness of recreational resources in their community.
  • Participates as an integral professional member of a multidisciplinary treatment team led by the Psychiatrist.
  • Consults with the healthcare team to promote, monitor and evaluate compliance with patient’s treatment plan.
  • Collaborates with internal hospital departments and outside agencies.
  • Provides and participates in trainings and consultations as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a recreation field from an accredited institution..

Licenses/Certifications

Licensure by the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure as a Licensed Recreation Therapist (LRT or LRTA) and certification, or eligibility to become certified, by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
