Position Summary:

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education.  A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform all duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide oversight of other sleep center staff.  The Polysomnographic Technologist is credentialed in Sleep Technology. The polysomnographic technologist will effectively manage care of patients across the age continuum from pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

Education

a.         High School Graduate or equivalent

b.         Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology.

                                                                        OR

c.         Successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technologist. 

                                                                              OR

d.         Other allied health credential (RRT, CRT, LPN, RN) with completion of Sleep Credential from BRPT, ABSM, or NBRC within 12 months of employment.

Experience

a.      Knowledge of usage of CPAP/BIPAP devices, oxygen administration, and application of devices

b.      Computer literacy with at least basic skills in Microsoft Word and Excel

Certification/Licensure/Registration

a.      Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds one of the following:

b.      Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST) or Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) or must be obtained within 12 months from date of hire.

c.       CPR/BLS certification

Preferred: Prior training as a Polysomnography technologist, EEG technologist, respiratory care practitioner or other allied health professional.  At least one year’s experience working with overnight sleep studies; scoring and reviewing of records; knowledge in use of CPAP/BIPAP devices, oxygen administration and application.  Member of a professional organization associated with sleep medicine such as the American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST) or American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).
