Labels, processes, and delivers specimens for testing.

Collects blood specimens using age-appropriate techniques.

Verifies patient and specimen identification before performing any procedure according to standard procedure.

Confers with patients to obtain the information needed for laboratory records, explain the procedure, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.

Collects drug screens according to the chain of custody guidelines and procedures.

Distributes samples to appropriate laboratory within expected deadlines immediately after collection.

Processes incoming requisitions and samples according to specimen processing protocols.

Centrifuges specimens and delivers specimens to correct testing area and stores blood samples for subsequent testing.

Allocates the appropriate amount of specimen to the appropriate tubes for the different tests and panels.

Verifies samples collected by non-laboratory personnel are properly collected, labeled and matched with the appropriate request or barcode labels for appropriate testing.

Enters patient demographics and order into laboratory computer system.

Investigates and verifies unusual orders with the units, physicians, and/or reference lab.

Queries, prints, faxes, mails, and/or charts any reports to the appropriate person/unit/office that requires manual reporting.

Performs clerical duties, including answering phones, data entry, and filing.

Completes and documents scheduled and unscheduled computer maintenance to include changing ribbons and labels, resetting terminals, downing terminal, logging in and out of system, and cleaning workstation.

Trains students or new employees as directed.

Utilizes the laboratory and hospital QA/PI plans to continually improve processes and designs.

Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture and finger/heel stick techniques using the appropriate equipment while following the criteria for age appropriateness following laboratory collection protocols. Record appropriate collection information on the collection containers.

Stock supplies and maintains inventory.

Perform pending log and uncollected specimen list checks throughout shift and utilize for handoff communication documentation. Resolve issues found therein.


Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Phlebotomy course or prior phlebotomy training preferred.

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. 

National phlebotomy certification such as ASPT or ASCP preferred.

BLS within 90 days of hire.

New hires will have ninety (90) days from date of hire to obtain American Heart Association certifications. Notwithstanding this 'grace period' for obtaining American Heart Association certifications, employees are not excused from being current in any and all existing certifications that are required for their position as outlined in the position job description.

Minimum Work Experience

Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
