Position Summary:

Performs venipuncture for the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis.  After additional training and experience, will also perform, arterial and capillary puncture for specimen collection.  Must be able to perform specimen collection for patients of all ages (neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics).  Provide back up for certain other laboratory personnel, such as clerk/courier, glassware washer and computer operator.  All duties are completed by utilizing the Five Pillars (People, Service Excellence, Clinical Excellence, Financial Excellence and Growth).

·         High school graduate or GED

·         Graduate from an Phlebotomy Technician Program

·         Superior customer service skills, excellent communication skills, good computer skills, use of basic office equipment.

·         Excellent documentation skills, highly detailed oriented, and ability to multitask and manage time effectively.

·         Knowledge of good laboratory practices, specimen integrity & stability, federal and state requirements for laboratory operations, and applicable accreditation standards.

·         Ability to operate laboratory centrifuges and to perform a variety of blood collection techniques successfully on all ages (neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatrics).

·         Ability to be a team player with effective interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to remain focused and productive in stressful situations, ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with frustrated patients, families, staff, and providers.

·         Ability and means to travel to various locations, including but not limited to other Meyersdale Medical Center offices and sites.

·         Ability to understand the standards and procedures for patient identification, specimen collection, specimen handling and proper computer entry.
