Position Summary:  The Laboratory Director is responsible for the direction and effective operation of the Laboratory Department, which includes planning, controlling and monitoring operational performance of the Laboratory; ensuring compliance with departmental and administrative policies and procedures; ensuring compliance with The Joint Commission, state and federal regulatory agencies; ensuring compliance with the College of American Pathologists standards and performance of surveys; developing/monitoring quality control programs; developing/monitoring continuous quality improvement, and participating in interdepartmental quality management; and ensuring quality and timeliness of patient test results by investigating problems involving specimen collection.  

Integrates evidence-based practices into operations and clinical protocols.
Enforcing and assisting in developing safety, infection control, and waste management procedures to promote a safe environment; maintaining inventory and supplies; developing and monitoring the staffing and operational budgetsConducting cost analysis and feasibility studies and determining financial impact to ensure effective cost containment; exploring innovative approaches to increase revenue.Analyzing laboratory computer application to manage data; preparing job descriptions and evaluations; selecting, orienting, training, scheduling, disciplining and evaluating competency of subordinate staff; contributing to resolution of conflicts within the Laboratory; training laboratory personnel in new technology and laboratory procedures.Working with pathologist to establish critical level values and develop acceptable criteria; interacting with other health care workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results within the framework of medical technology.Physician Relations: Interacts positively with members of the medical staff by cultivating liaisons and promoting interaction. Informing physicians concerning details and limitations of Lab proceduresDefining hospital and departmental policies to physicians, patients and other health care workers; participating in hospital and medical staff committees as directed; and facilitating effective working relationships inter/intra-departmental.Plans, directs and ensures hospital lab management services and functions are performed in accordance with internal and external guidelines, regulations, policies, and procedures.Coordinates assignment of lab staff to meet required services in each area. Supports lab coordination of services to ensure compliance with hospital policies/procedures and regulatory requirements.Physician Relations: Interacts positively with members of the medical staff by cultivating liaisons and promoting interaction.Maintains staffing levels to meet the needs of the department. Maintains time keeper system (Kronos) up to date and approve employee time by designated cut off time.Assumes the responsibility for successfully fulfilling standards and criteria of licensing and accrediting agencies as they relate to lab functions.Manages the department in a cost-effective manner by utilizing current materials management techniques, maximizing human resources and continuously reevaluating the manner in which services are delivered.Attends meetings, prepares reports and analyzes and provides recommendations in a timely and accurate manner.To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without a reasonable accommodation.Every effort has been made to make this job description as complete as possible. Minimum EducationBachelor’s degree in medical laboratory scienceOR Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological scienceOR Associate’s degree in another discipline with documented chemistry and biology hours that satisfy CLIA requirements for high complexity testing personnel.ORHave previously qualified or could have qualified as a technologist under § 493.1489;(4) On or before April 24, 1995 be a high school graduate or equivalent and have either -(i) Graduated from a medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS; or(ii) Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician).
Minimum Work Experience6 years technical bench level, at least 3 years Laboratory Leadership experience required in Hospital Setting.
Required Licenses[United States] Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist)
Medical Laboratory Scientist certification by ASCP or AMT, or HEW(MT), or equivalent certification is required upon date of hire. Training/Certification prior to 1988 -Certification program or Military training, ASCP or HEW certification is accepted.
