The Certified Medical Assistant provides direct and indirect patient care.  He/she applies the nursing process to follow the plan of care for patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning.  The Certified Medical Assistant must possess good communication skills and must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, peers, patients, and families.  He/She works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure quality care is delivered.

Essential Functions 

Providing nursing care appropriate to the condition and needs of the patient.

Prepares patients for examination and treatment.

Documents patients’ medical history, chief complaint, vital signs, and other appropriate information on the medial record

Prepares exam and treatment rooms, before and after each patient, with necessary instruments.

Assists with injections, casts, splints, and dressing applications.

Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment.

Orders clinical supplies: monitors and controls clinical expenditures to remain within budget.

Assists physicians in preparing for minor surgeries, physicals, and procedures.

Schedules or assists with the scheduling of test and treatments for patients.

Obtains referrals and precertification’s for patients.

Schedules patients’ appointments as needed and assists with other front office duties as necessary.

Assist in maintaining patient files, records, and other information to contribute to accurate data gathering.

Assist with coding and charges when applicable.

Attends required meetings and participated in committees as required.

Administering medications and treatments within the scope of practice for a Certified Medical Assistant

Operating medical equipment used in the care of the patient.

Providing patient care following nursing standards of care in a manner that promotes excellent outcomes, avoids harm to patients, and promotes health and healing.

Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.

Performs related work as required.

Maintains strictest confidentiality.

Responsible for ensuring compliance with OSHA and CLIA

The ability and willingness to follow established Standards of Performance

Non-Essential Functions 

Other duties as assigned.
Must complete all assigned education in a timely manner.
Must complete department specific education.

Organizational Expectations 

Actively participates in Foundation Safety Behavior Tools and Tactics and Tactics such as Briefs, Debriefs, Huddles, Learning Board Activities, Executive Patient Safety Rounds and reporting of unanticipated and unintended patient events regardless of whether there is harm.

Job Requirements 

Minimum Education
High School diploma or equivalent preferred

Required Skills
Must possess strong computer skills and can work with multiple computer systems.
Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English
Must be able to operate standard patient care equipment for services provided.
Must have knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Must possess skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
Must possess the ability to work well under pressure, to adapt quickly in changing situations, to function dependently and independently and to be flexible in applying basic nursing knowledge to a variety of settings.

Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) must be obtained within 30 days of date of hire
Licenses: Must possess an active CMA or RMA
Must have current BLS/CPR certification within 30 days of hire date.
