Position Summary

Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various

disease states.

 

Reports to: Laboratory Director

 

Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing.
  • Collects samples and analyze bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities. Collects blood and study blood samples used in transfusions
  • Operates laboratory equipment in a high-quality, effective manner.
  • Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, and reports/documents results per organizational standards.
  • Performs automated tests using computerized instruments & automated equipment.
  • Performs manual tests based on detailed instructions from a physician.
  • Runs tests and analyzes the results to be reported to the patient, physician or registered nurse.
  • Performs Quality Assurance work to ensure accuracy of equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by laboratory supervisors or director.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Assists with all general clerical work such as QC, QA, and answering phones, and looking up reports.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment.
  • Reviews, approves, and maintains all patient and QC results on a daily basis.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining procedure manuals.
  • Accurately register client samples, results with comments, order tests, cancel and add tests as required.
  • Works unsupervised and uses good judgment to make independent decisions in any department assigned to.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in assigned departments.
  • Assists in evaluating new laboratory equipment and problem laboratory procedures.
  • Assists in training new employees on laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Scientist is required.

Master’s degree is preferred.

 

Certifications/Licenses:

Active and valid license with ASCP or comparable National certification at hire or eligible to sit for certification within 6 months.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is required through American Heart Association upon hire.

 

Minimum Work Experience

One year experience in a clinical laboratory as a technologist, hospital environment needed. For third shift, at least three years of experience is preferred.

Physical Environment

Works inside and is exposed to infections from disease-bearing specimens and to odorous chemicals and specimens. Constantly required to hear normal sounds with some background noise as in answering phone, intercom, etc. Often exposed to electromagnetic radiation as in CRT's or VDT's. Often exposed to blood, body tissues, or fluids. Often exposed to hazardous waste material other than blood, body tissues, or fluids. Often exposed to radiation. Often exposed to other hazardous materials such as chemicals.
