Clinical Lab Techs perform diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. They will perform a variety of routine and complex testing ranging from waived to high complexity testing in all sections of the laboratory, including Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. Clinical Lab Techs participate in patient testing, quality control, CAP surveys, policy and procedure development, and equipment maintenance.

Essential Functions: 

  • Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing.
  • Recognizes and acts immediately to correct errors in the performance of tests and procedures, reporting promptly to the immediate supervisor.
  • Performs Quality Assurance work to ensure the accuracy of equipment to include QC and preventive and corrective maintenance and associated documentation.
  • Participates in continuing and mandatory educational activities in a timely manner, meeting expected deadlines on own initiative.
  • Performs specialized techniques/projects under the supervision of the Lab Manager.
  • Assists laboratory perform functions to meet regulatory compliance.
  • Collects samples and analyze bodily fluids and substances for abnormalities. Collects blood and tests blood samples used for pre-transfusion testing.
  • Operates laboratory equipment in a high-quality, effective manner.
  • Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits, and reports/documents results per organizational standards.
  • Performs automated tests using computerized instruments & automated equipment.
  • Performs manual tests based on established policies and procedures and accepted laboratory practice.
  • Runs tests and analyzes the results to be reported to the provider or registered nurse in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the training and education of MLT students.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required or in lieu of BA Degree HEW designation as technologist required.
  • Completion of Medical Technology Program preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

  • ASCP preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience:
    • 1-3 years experience working in a laboratory is strongly preferred
