Job Summary:


Performs, under the supervision of a registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer, a variety of 
diagnostic examinations associated with the operation of ultrasound equipment to produce 
diagnostic images of designated portions of the heart. Demonstrates all aspects of 
echocardiogram performance including, tasks involved in creating images of the heart, cardiac 
chambers, valves, and vessels for the purpose of assessing heart function and diagnosing heart 
ailments. Work closely with Chief Cardiac Sonographer cardiologists and other physicians, often 
performing the technical aspects of the examinations, evaluating the findings, and reporting them 
to the cardiologists. Provide patient care, such as preparing the patients for the sonographic 
imaging and providing them with instruction during the echocardiograph. Effectively 
documentation and billing of procedure.

Essential Functions:

  • Works under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered ultrasound technologist while 
    performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Performs all aspects of ECG's.
  • Assist with Stress Testing (Treadmill only).
  • Assist with Echo’s, Stress Echo's, Dobutamine Echo's and assist with Trans esophageal echoes.
  • Performs all related paperwork including; Secures patient information; prepares a permanent record of test performed; copies, faxes and/or delivers test result bills, and records for test performed.
  • Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation. 
  • Monitors patient condition continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate.
  • Prepares equipment and supplies.
  • Implements safety and performs appropriate quality control procedures on equipment.
  • Troubleshoots, resolves, and/or reports equipment malfunctions as necessary.
  • Positions patient and performs imaging procedure.
  • Assures confidentiality of patient information, departmental and hospital affairs.
  • Administers age specific (neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) patient care promptly according to the patient's plan of care.
  • Assures appropriate orders are obtained and followed during the performance of all procedures.
  • Verifies patient identification before performing any procedure.
  • Adheres to all Departmental and Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assist in staff functions such as registering patients, general office duties, filing, and transporting of patients.
  • Will perform additional duties, as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • Diploma or GED required.
  • Senior Cardiovascular Echo student of an approved Ultrasound Technology Program


Required Skills

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications: 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (within 1 year of date of hire or transfer)
  • Handle with Care within 3 months of hire or transfer
  • Registry eligible

Computer:

  • Basic computer skills


Clerical:

  • General knowledge of clerical duties
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal 
    supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful/fast-paced environment and take appropriate 
    action.
  • Proficient in cardiovascular ultrasound examinations, knowledge of ultrasound 
    equipment operations: PACs
