Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Director, Clinical Services and according to established policies and procedures, plans, coordinates and/or provides patient education and clinical educational opportunities for all employees in the department. Works with other nursing and ancillary personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. Work is of a highly confidential nature. Performs duties related to direct patient care as described for Staff Registered Nurse. Performs other duties of the department as required.
Essential Functions
As a member of the Nursing Team:
1. Develop and plan program goals and objectives based on an annual needs assessment and on management directives.
- Develops, distributes, and analyzes the annual needs assessment
- In consultation with the nursing managers and preceptors, examines patient care needs, staff needs, and regulatory requirements and provides educational activities
- Plans, implements, and/or conducts in-service and continuing education programs
- Assists with general orientation for new nursing employees and students when necessary.
a. Assists with assessment of nursing staff education needs at least once annually, in collaboration and cooperation with Organizational Development and nursing management.
b. Develops, documents, and effectively implements an educational curriculum, which correlates with the needs assessment findings.
c. Establishes measurable methods for evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs, following through, as warranted, to resolve problems with coordination, content, or delivery, when found.
d. Program presentations are clear, well-organized, interestingly presented, and well-supported by handouts, visual aids, and exercises.
e. Ensures that nursing employees receive necessary information with regard to nursing policies, procedures protocols, and patient teaching programs.
f. Ensures that training documentation systems are established and maintained, so that status, progress, and participation can be easily monitored.
g. Ensures that JCAHO requirements for patient and nursing staff education are thoroughly communicated and that incidents of non-compliance are identified and action plans are developed.
2. Serves as a resource with respect to patient education and nursing practice policies, procedures, concepts, methods, and problem-solving techniques.

a. Effectively explains, demonstrates, and/or provides assistance with respect to patient education and nursing practice policies, procedures, concepts, methods and problem-solving techniques.
b. Effectively facilitates the patient and nursing education process through appropriate guidance, feedback and instruction.
c. Responds promptly to requests for information or assistance, when asked.
3. Expands patient and nursing staff education knowledge base by assisting in organizing and updating available publications, periodicals, videotapes and other educational materials.
a. Routinely solicits and evaluates new educational materials, aids, and educational resources for compatibility and potential benefit to the educational effort, recommending those that are affordable and have the most potential to upgrade the effort.
b. Routinely evaluates and makes revisions to existing materials and aids, so as to enhance program effectiveness.
c. Provides timely input into budget planning process, as assigned, ensuring that recommendations are properly substantiated, reflect thorough research, and are cost-effective.
d. Collaborates with the manager for the attainment/purchase, cataloging, and storing of education materials, ensuring that any record-keeping or billing requirements are appropriately handled on a timely basis.
e. Establishes a method for informing nursing personnel of available resources, on a regular basis.
4. Stays knowledgeable of patient education and nursing training and development practices.
a. Establishes a network of contacts for the purpose of exchanging information, developments, and experiences, and actively participates in the established network for this purpose.
b. Routinely researches issues/developments through library searches, professional organizations, and other avenues, so as to stay abreast of state-of-the-art concepts and developments.
5. Provides input into product evaluation and policy/procedure development.
- Participates in new patient/hospital product evaluation and implementation
- Recommends changes in departmental/hospital policies, procedures, standards or practices that will improve services, contain costs, and/or maintain currency of practice
a. Methodically evaluates and provides relevant and valid recommendations with respect to new procedures, equipment, services, and products, as requested or needed.
6. Evaluate patient care outcomes for selected patients.
a. Effectively researches and resolves patient care problems, and routinely provides input into the establishment of unit procedures/policy in response to situations or patient care problems, including the PACT process.
b. Routinely evaluates patient care outcomes, and discusses unusual or difficult patient care experiences with peers and team members in an effort to improve patient care planning and care provided.
7. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team.
a. Effectively collaborates with team members, physicians and other pertinent personnel, as warranted, ensuring that communications are professional, clear, and timely.
b. Accurately and appropriately documents and communicates to physicians or other appropriate personnel, pertinent observations, reactions and status changes in patients' response to care as they occur.
8. Documents nursing observations, assessments, medications, treatments, and other care given.
a. Required documentation is accurate, complete, timely, legible, properly edited, and reflects proper use of terminology.
b. Ensures that any necessary information and releases are obtained in accordance with procedure and time frames.
9. Assists in the orientation of new personnel, and provides continuing education for existing staff.
a. Effectively explains procedures and protocols, demonstrates procedures and techniques, and answers questions when assisting with the orientation of new personnel or students.
b. Establishes and implements effective in-service training sessions to address new/revised clinical policies, procedures, equipment, techniques and advances in clinical nursing practice.
c. Routinely provides for "on-the-spot" in-services for staff assigned to complicated/unstable patients when minor deficiencies are observed, so that problems do not persist or grow worse.
d. Contributes to the professional development of selected personnel, by observing work, answering questions, explaining proper procedures, demonstrating techniques and intervening as warranted to correct deficiencies or help resolve problems.
e. Provides substantiated input into the performance development process for selected personnel with respect to clinical nursing practice.
10. Performs special projects and administrative support assignments, as needed.

a. Ensures that required Category II credentialing activities and documentation are accomplished.
b. Adequately prepares for, and effectively facilitates competency skills labs.
c. Accomplishes assigned projects in accordance with instructions and time frames.
d. Effectively coordinates detailed arrangements and administrative requirements as needed to ensure that desired outcomes are obtained.
e. Conducts chart reviews for appropriate documentation and completion of indicators.
11. Maintains skill competence, and assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.
a. Remains capable of communicating and demonstrating all skills required for the position.
b. Attends at least 80% of scheduled staff meetings, and maintains 8 hours of continuing education.
12. Participates in performance improvement activities.
a. Effectively performs data collection, analysis, and idea generation pertinent to performance improvement programs, on an ongoing basis, per management request.
13. Performs miscellaneous duties, as needed.
-Participates in other hospital and departmental support activities such as the disaster plan and other emergency situations that require stand-by and re-call at times

Minimum Education
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaurea¬te degree in Nursing;
Current NC or multistate RN licensure required and at least 2 years of professional nursing experience required.
Demonstrated performance in position(s) requiring advanced clinical skills and educational expertise.
The employee must have the ability to understand, communicate and react effectively to the unique needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. BLS is required, or obtained during the first week of hire.
