Essential Functions: 

Assists the Laboratory Director with obtaining and maintaining compliance with The Joint Commission or other accrediting bodies, in hiring of new staff, with staff scheduling, and payroll management.
Determines, coordinates, and supervises daily staffing assignments and levels necessary to meet productivity goals and patient care needs.
Leads the handling and resolution of complex issues and complaints.
Assesses and ensures quality of services delivered and facilitates staff development programs. Ensures staff compliance with departmental and organizational policies, procedures, and protocols.
Utilizes critical thinking skills to assist the Laboratory Director with technical and logistical issues with staffing, quality, and Joint Commission or other accrediting body compliance.
Provides direction, orientation, training, coaching, and mentoring to staff. Performs or assists with performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
Performs staff responsibilities as needed to fulfill required service levels.
Oversees and reviews the performance of quality control and assists staff with taking necessary corrective action when controls are outside acceptable limits.
Reviews instrument and equipment maintenance logs monthly and assists staff with daily instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Instructs and trains new employees and coordinates competency assessment performance and provides educational in-services as needed.
Coordinates and oversees the performance of quarterly and annual laboratory equipment checks per established laboratory policy.
Troubleshoots, resolves, and/or reports equipment malfunctions as necessary.
Participates in hospital wide and departmental performance improvement activities.
May collect specimens and perform testing in all areas of clinical laboratory.
Oversees the performance of linearity and correlations for applicable analytes every 6 months, quality control, and QA review.
Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
Minimum EducationBachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or currently enrolled - degree completion within one year of hire or transfer.
Minimum Work ExperienceFive years of laboratory experience in high complexity testing within the specialties or subspecialties of microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, coagulation, urinalysis, and blood banking with proven technical and leadership skills.
Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work independently. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals in a constructive and professional manner.
Certifications: Certification as MT or MLS (ASCP) or MT (AMT) or MT(HEW) or MT (NCA) - obtain within one year of hire/transfer
