To maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection.

 

To assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery.

 

To function within the OB setting with added skills specific to the setting.

 

General Functional Demands

Full range of body motion and flexibility required on a daily basis.

 

Ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop, bend required on a daily basis.

 

Ability to verify visual and audio alarms on machines.

 

Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, and sharps as well as unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.

 

Exposure to hazardous chemicals, including cleaning agents and disinfectants.

 

 Exposure to electrical current.

 

Surgical Functional Demands

Before an operation, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile linens, and sterile solutions.

 

Checks, adjusts, and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units, and diagnostic equipment.

 

Maintains supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood, and glucose for use during operation.

 

Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.

 

Also transports, positions patients on table, and covers them with sterile surgical "drapes."

 

Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile operating room attire to be able to work within the sterile field established around the patient and to handle the sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in the procedure.

 

Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments, and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.

 

Helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and applies dressings as directed.

 

Cleans and restocks the operating room.

 

Monitors the temperature and humidity of the OB OR suite and reports any variance outside accepted best practice values.

 

Adheres to The Joint Commission (TJC) on professional standards and attends hospital in-service training sessions as directed.

 

Provides age-appropriate care for all age groups.

 

Unit Specific Expectations

 Prepares instrument for vaginal deliveries using sterile technique.

 

Attends vaginal deliveries, when possible, assisting with cleaning, moving equipment, care and transportation of soiled instruments and other tasks as needed.

 

Understands and maintains infant safety, identification measures and security.

 

Orders supplies as directed.

 

Gathers prenatal forms from the OB/GYN office, organizes this information and prepares charts for planed admissions.

 

Other jobs as identified and competent.

Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information.

Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and TJC standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service, projects and committees as assigned.

 

Adheres to and supports policies and procedures of the STRHS.

 

Works scheduled shifts including overtime, when necessary.

 

Accepts all call schedule as directed.

 

Maintains a neat and professional appearance in compliance to the existing dress code.

 

Compliance to the STRHS Standard of Behavior is required.

 

Compliance to Dress Code Standards.

 

Should this job description be filled by a PRN employee, they will be subject to the requirements of that position.

 

Reports to the Director of Women Services.

 


Job Requirements

Minimum Education

Must be a graduate of a Practical Nursing Program.

Required Skills

Must have a high energy level with ability to work under stress of the operating room atmosphere and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility

 

Certifications

 

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire.

AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of hire preferred.

NRP within 6 months of hire.

 

Licenses

 

Must be a licensed LPN in the State of Tennessee.

Minimum Work Experience

At least one year of experience in a surgical environment is preferred.

Experience in an OB setting preferred.
