Position Summary:

The Nurse Extern I and II performs a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in a complementary and assistive role.

  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN or LPN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
  • Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms and common areas stocked, clean and orderly.
  • Documents patient care information in appropriate systems.
  • Assists with ADL’s for assigned patients.

 

Required Skills

·       Critical thinking skills

·       Decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

·       Capable of working in a stressful environment and taking appropriate action.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited ADN or BSN program and in good standing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CNA or SRNA Required if the nursing school program is discontinued or may be required to transfer to a PCA position. 

Education Requirements

·        Nurse Extern I and II: High school diploma or equivalent: Required

·        Nurse Extern I: Currently enrolled in an approved RN program: Required

·        Nurse Extern II: Currently enrolled in the second year of an RN program: Required
