The Lab Assistant performs technical and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.

  • Performs waived and moderately complex testing and Microbiology setups (excluding reading of gram stains).
  • Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.
  • Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, blood culture collection, blood sample collection, nasal and throat swab collection, Microbiology sample setup and performing and resulting waived and moderately complex testing. 
  • Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible on all age groups. 
  • Performs LIS tasks as indicated. Identifies the patient - using two patient identifiers, comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient identification band before venipuncture is performed.
  • Labels all samples correctly and accurately, to include collection date, time and collector initials, before dismissing the patient or leaving the patients' bedside. 
  • Performs all drug screen collections (DOT, pre-employment, outside agencies) accurately, including completion of requisitions. 
  • Files paperwork correctly. Is knowledgeable about which color tube to use and the volume of blood needed- knows test requirements and order of draw.
  • Follows standard precautions at all times.
  • Cleans and restocks trays.
  • Maintains work areas,
  • Orders supplies when needed. 
  • Knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, Routine orders and outpatients. 
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or GED: Required
  • Graduate of a Program in Discipline Preferred
  • 1-3 Years of previous experience in phlebotomy preferred

Certifications:

  • Phlebotomy Certification: Preferred
